Seriously disappointed, so far (not so much, now)

by Derry Bryson · in Torque Game Engine · 07/27/2007 (11:11 pm) · 10 replies

Yeah, I am dissappointed in the docs, but not the engine. I deleted the post because reading it after I posted it, I decided it was just me whining and probably wouldn't be useful. I thought deleting it would delete the whole thread, but I was wrong and now we have a headless thread (sorry about that). I have requested the whole thread be deleted, but we will have to wait for a moderator to get to that.

What did the first post say?

It said he had just got the engine and he was disappointed with what he got, the doc's were a joke etc (or something to that effect).
why did he delete the post?

hey... nothing wrong with whining... i do it all the time... and, sometimes i get what i want from it :)

seriously though... i can understand your frustration at this point... i remember back when i first started with Torque, ages and ages ago... when the dinosaurs ruled... and men where men, and... well, you get the picture...

back then the docs situation was even more frustrating... there was none... well, what there was was pretty sparse, especially compared to what there is now...

and most of the seasoned gods here will understand, and will tolerate a lil bit of whining... they're a generous bunch, and willing to help a noob get on board and up to speed...

also... once you start to understand that Torque is unlike anything that you may have encountered before... it's a dynamic and fast changing environment... really not for the faint of heart... you gotta be willing to tread where you have feared to tread before... get into the scripting, and then don't fear the engine code neasty... jump into it as soon as you feel ready...

best you get the first Ken Finney book... seriously... this one will save you months of frustration...

you must come away with a few basic concepts... the difference between server and client, the understanding of the relationship between the directory structure and the engine (where to put your scripted code), and the concept of ghost objects (again, client server)...

there were a few threads i could point to, but most of em have evaporated in with time...

trust me... you didn't waste your moeny... or your time... TGE has big time potential, depending om what sort of project you have in mind... there's a lot to learn, and a big learning curve 9not a hard one, just a big one)... the trick is finding out what you need to know...

ASK... most of the time, you will get a relevant reply (again, most of the members here who actually know the engine will offer help)...

now all that said, i haven't been able to get a single game out of the door with TGE or TGEA... so, i guess the final bit of advice i can give you is... do as i say, not as i do...

good luck...

What helped me get started (besides buying 'game programmers guide to torque' ) was going through all the forums and looking at what other people were trying to do and try to solve their problem. It helped me a lot especially when I didn't know where to start myself. Reading the docs on TDN, resources and tutorials on other websites also helped a lot. If you need anything just ask.

Thanks for the support. I bought the two Finney (3D Game Programming All In One and the Advanced one) books and Maurina's The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque and I am doing much better now.

I haven't read the books so I don't know how they are on the point, but make sure you have datablocks down pat. That was the hardest concept for me for a while, and when I got it everything sort of went 'click'. Also make sure you get the difference between the script and the engine code.
