Questions about RW modeling
by Sven "RaCooN" Knie · in General Discussion · 08/01/2002 (3:04 am) · 10 replies
Hello!
Some members of our company 3D-Diggers (http://www.3d-diggers.de) want to support the Community Game “Realm Wars”. But there are some questions left:
1. There are several sketches of concepts in the Screenshot Gallery but there is no list of which sketches are already in progress or even done.
2. How detailed do we have to work? The player has 4,474 and the crossbow 774 polygons. Is this meant as upper limit or is it an average value?
3. I would like to model a ceremonial orcish campfire site (see picture below). Which kind of format would be better, DTS or DIF? Whereas I think that DIF would not achieve the optical quality of DTS.
4. Who is responsible for the finished models? Who administrates and coordinates the whole business?
Best regards
Sven Knie

@Stuart, it's possible that you see this pic. It is out of the RealmWars snapshot gallery.hmm, as a dif ?? the first campfire in RealmWars is a dts.

I suppose if you want people to stand in the campfire, use a DIF.
If not, use a DTS.
Then again, i'm no expert :D

1 You are correct not all concepts have been set up as modeling tasks yet. Likely that won't happen since we are planning to have a whole lot of concepts, to set mood and give people a general idea. This especially goes for regular items, like campfires, tables, racks, crates, stuff like that. The way i figure it is along the way i will put up tasks asking for an item in the line of a few concepts we have up already. That way we won't have to draw out every little item and at the same time we leave room for the contributors imagination as long as it fits in the concept. We hope to have some more concepts up soon after that I will start putting in tasks in the model section of the project manager.
2 How detailed?? I would say player models around 2000 polys, a weapon around 500 polys.
I don’t believe the player was 4474, you probably included the multiress mesh in that count.
3 I would probably do it as a DTS, I would be able to put more detail in than again I am not to familiar with worldcraft. Maybe you could do a combination of both, make the circle wall with worldcraft and the wood and standard as DT that way we could use them both separate but also together. You would have to look in the scaling though.
4 Me I will report directly to the GG guys and the rest of the team.
Hope that answers your questions, I will be looking forward to your submissions =O)

seem like no one claims on the OrC FirePit ??? So i can try it.
here a cheap sample of my work (sorry but i'm original a stupid c++ coder ;))

i made this from following scetch

It has 694 Polys, you will get a better one with less Polys from one of our modeler and with another skin.
PS: Nice new scetches. What kind of material do you want for the bell ???

No i don't believe the fire pit was taken by anyone.
For the bell i would say you could use what you want just don't make it all shiny and all, make it look old it doesn't have any protection so it is probably corroded and dirty.. Just give it a try.

Axe doesn't look all to bad, could use some work on the textures but surly it isn't bad at all...No i don't believe the fire pit was taken by anyone.

Please, ask before making something, this is important, cause we don't have anything for the moment to know who is doing what...
Thx :-)
Yours looks cool!

oops, I've made this axe some times before! Please, ask before making something, this is important, cause we don't have anything for the moment to know who is doing what...
Thx :-)

I see yours and man, this axe is looking great. Be sure i can take critic.
question, how many polys have your model. What software do you use to make the model and the skin ??
one point:
Yes, to ask is a good idea, maybe even better should be to claim on the models. so no one can overread an ask for a model (at least till the projectmanager goes online).

But with every community you have a big skills gab and i was apointed to pick out what is good and what is not (lovely job huh =O))....
Every one has the same chance to get his work in the game but i have to look for quality and consistancy so work can be ignored, i guess thats just the way it is...
I just got a mail form Jeff telling me i have some more options in the project manager so i can clearly state what has been done and what hasn't i hope that will help...
You could always write me a mail, i can tell you who is working on what and if you want i can give you advise on concepts, modeling, textures and even the exporting process...
I know we all can get this thing going, but i can't promiss that your model will be the best to fit in the game. I can be real pain in the ass when it comes to the quality we ask on the other hand i am here to help people to get their work on that level, so don't hasitate to ask for my help.

Well the project manager was designed so every one could work on any project... That could mean that several people could be working on the same thing, since it is a community project...But with every community you have a big skills gab and i was apointed to pick out what is good and what is not (lovely job huh =O))....

Sven, your axe looks good, it has some things I'ven't put in mine.
Everyone has his own style, and I like yours.
The model is less than 600polys, don't remember exactly.

For the moment, I think one person/model is good for productivity ;-) Later we can change model...Sven, your axe looks good, it has some things I'ven't put in mine.

I'd suggest using a DIF, as that has more precise collision detection.
