IDEA: Torque and a book!
by Stede Troisi · in General Discussion · 07/29/2002 (1:24 pm) · 111 replies
I spend at least $50.00 on Andre LaMothe and other game development books that teach very, very little.
Wouldn't it be cool to get a HOW TO PROGRAM GAMES BOOK with Torque (which now comes with a compiler) for $125 or more?
I bet there is someone on this site that could write such a book. Maybe a few of you! And the exposure that Torque and Garage Games would get for a book in Barnes and Nobles that teaches how a REAL game engine is created would be an instant hit in my opinion.
ANYONE AGREE?

Actually my idea is this, there are already soOOOOOO many engine coding books, game coding book, game design books. But all I really wanna know is HOW THE F#$% DID YOU guys (by you guys i mean anyone who's finished making a game) make that fab game of yours. How did you schedule your time, how did you find the people who worked on the project, how did you get funding for THAT project, yep THAT particular project not theory but real situations, can you show me some of your documentation for the game. I dunno what the big secret is but everyone is willing to throw code away left right and center but code is complete jibberish without any documentation to guide you through it and no one wants to relinquish their documentation. Which leads me to believe its either taboo or people are just too plain lazy to have any in the first place.
Anyway to get to the point, I wanted to makes a game BUT I also wanted to produce a journal showing how I made it. The journal would include cleaned up notes, documentations, sketches to final proofs to final examples of artwork. Problems I encountered and how I got around them. Basically what should happen is if I had passed on my journal to someone they could recreate my game from scratch.
Ahhh a new games that's nice. Some of the community here might be interested, but since we're developers wouldn't it be nicer to package a game with a journal for an extra few bucks.
I dunno that's just my take on it. and why haven't I done this already is I've been working on something else which you should see soon enough and 2 I haven't actually WRITTEN a game in torque yet.
anyway that's just my take on it

I had been thinking more along the lines for game making noobs, with perhaps a chapter or two of more advanced ideas.
Of course, I've seen thicker books on programming QuickBASIC. ;-)

I'll post more info once I've received the OK from the publisher (due to NDA).

I think if you're under NDA mentioning there is a book has already broken it, so you may as well tell us anyway :)

I realize this is way late, but those older posts I noticed said that no game has actually been made with the torque engine yet, is this true, or was it only true at the time those posts were written?Keith Weatherby II

Take a look at the GG products page, currently the top 3 TGE games are Marble Blast, Orbz and ThinkTanks (in no specific order).

Uses the Torque Engine throughout, also covers MilkShape 3D and QuArK, among other tools. Probably best for the denizens of this site to hang on until the details are sorted out for GG to sell it here, so you that can buy it from GG. That's in the works, and it shouldn't take too long for that...although I couldn't tell you exactly when.

This will be great for the Torque community. I'm curious what areas you cover in the book. The description says it covers how to make a FPS, and since the TGE comes with a working but unfinished FPS, I'm very curious how you expand on that in the book.

Have you added it as a Resource yet?

oh, nevermind, I saw the name of the author.

That looks great but how do you know it coevrs torque throught out the book? All i see is that it comes with a full featured game engine, but torque is 100 dollars here and the book is only 50 dollars.oh, nevermind, I saw the name of the author.

I would definitely fork over $50 for even a general book, as I've spent that much on several game making books that only had one or two tidbits of relevant info in them.
