UV Unwrap question

For unwrapping UVs for humanoid models, I know there's a number of programs that will automatically do it for you, but are any actually good at it, or do you spend so much time fixing and reprojecting that it's just easier to have done it all yourself in the first place?

Some people swear by these unwrapping utilities and some prefer to do it themselves because they want a custom setup that will work perfectly with their model.

I personally prefer to create my own custom UVW unwraps because I do not like how the majority of the utilities unwrap the mesh. Most of the utilities are getting a heck of a lot smarter though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a half decent one in a year or two.

I personally have tried almost everything out there. Usually when they get done get done you have to sit down and figure out how to paint the thing to get it to look nice. Especially if you have a single mesh humanoid.
I personally find it much eisier to unwrap the things myself. At least I can keep track of whats what. 3dmax has a good unwrap system along with textporter its usually not a big task.

I agree about unwrappers getting smarter. I recently used Deep UV and Deep paint. Both of those are great tools (If you got the money). And they make painting alot easier. I am waiting for an Unwrapper system that follows the shape of the humanoid. Maybe according to the biped or pysique. Or maybe its own adjustable pattern. Regardless someone has got to come up with it soon or later.
