Collision Detection

Hi,
I am learning to build a physics engine for an upcoming game idea I have and I was wondering how does the torque engine handle collision detection. I assume there is well optimised existing code already there that I could get my own physics engine to talk to. Am I correct in this assumption? If not could someone let me know, and tell me if I will have to code my own collision detection too?
