Business, Reality, Dreams and the Messiah!

by Stede Troisi · in General Discussion · 07/27/2002 (8:13 pm) · 144 replies

I have always had a desire to make a decent living from making games. Eventually I became a business programmer as the complexity and resources required to make a game became unrealistic.

At first I thought I would be a game programmer working for a great development company. Then I hear that most of these companies, capitalizing on the desires of young, talented programmers pay them $50,000 and make them work 22 out of 24 hours in a day while they make billions; also not for me.

Then I hear about GarageGames and their desire to become the new Messiah for game dreamers (the term I used for indie developers) in the 21st century.

Although you can learn a lot about development on this site the thing I have learned most (and value the most) is the business related issues.

One of my biggest observations is the fact that the Messiahs have/are now guarenteed to make millions! Think $100 * 10,000 subscribers to this site. Although there will be a few developed games most will fair or never get off the ground because of finance reasons.

I am amused to here Jeff Tunnel mention time and time again that financing is something YOU have to take care of but without you have Zero chance of success. I am also amused at the fear of many posts on this site of GG going out of business. I can't imagine how with so many game dreamers out there.

Do not get me wrong but I love the guys for opening this site. It has taught me a lot about the practical side of starting any business as I seek to go from an employee to an employer. I just wonder if anyone else realizes this?

Does anyone else know the chances of you becoming an sucessful indie developer is almost nill?

I would love to hear from all on all aspects of the BUSINESS side of things! Am I wrong?

Here is a repost of my First Message: Please, I enjoy GarageGames and don't like the silly flames. Only respond if you have something of real value to say: And please no more STALKERS LIKE DAVE STROCK

Yup, if by "stalker" you mean someone who knows how to do a whois on your domain name to see when it was registered. And then to look at the source of your web page to see the nice copywrite notice from the script that was used. Well then, yup I'm a stalker.

Most people on the GG community is nice people, but everyon human being has a tolerance point, you just got many of us over that point, so it makes some people start saying things that they shouldn't, still the point is simple, you are just building a war against the community in which you are posting, so naturally you will receive lot's of opinions against you.
Also, the things that Dave invested some time to find out are... interesting ;)
Please don't bring chaos to peace.

What is interesting??? That I have a web site? OK!

Yeah Ed, I don't think I want to start a new thread.

I want people to see how you and other like DAVE act when you start a touchy subject.

I want to see the flames you posted and how Dave has to research every aspect of my web site (for whatever reason) like I was running for President. LOL!

You and your "FRIENDLY" community have created a Piss Pool and now you want out.

Boy, I wouldn't start another thread unless it was to stroke your ego because that is all you can do on here without getting private investigators on your site!

Scary dudes, It really shows no life and a fantic, almost cult like quality.

Stede,

Yes, trading insults is counter productive. I feel tht my behavior on these boards is a reflection of my company. I try hard to be as respectful as I can be to any individual that posts here.

As for your questions,

I see where you are coming from but I respectfully have to disagree with some of the base assumptions you have made.

While your perception of the situation can in many ways be interpetered as an accurate analysis, the numbers you are throwing out are inflated and paint everything in a bad light.

There is hype and there is deception. GarageGames may be gulity of hype, but my percpetion is that the hype that they have built is a long way from being deceptive.

I am going to start writing something up that exposes my view on the business side of gaming, and the issues you are interested in. Hopefully turn this flame war into a good discussion.

Might take me a few minutes.

You know for someone who claims to be a web designer you sure have some really sloppy HTML.
Like for example....

I'm afraid to tell you that even someone with HTML for dummies wouldn't do something like that. My dad owns the book, and I've never seen him do that.

Oh btw, the company hosting page I made for the guys who've been giving me my email is STILL up and going after 4 years so I can at least claim to know what I'm doing somewhat.

As for Hype and Deception I agree totally. From the emails and the few "GOOD" posts I realize now that Torque is a great engine and that in the hands of a well trained programmer you could make a great game!

I believe the flaw lies in the hype of the presentation. But is hype a form of deception? I don't know but hell I am going to find out even with the STALKERS on this site.

Haha, you should actually be glad. The reason I did a whois on your domain in the first place was to see if you even owned it, or atleast the name you're using here matched up. I figured you were just claiming that was your site, tho in retrospect I'm not sure why. :)

And if you really wanted to have a discussion about the business side of game development, you would create a nice list of topics to discuss like others have asked for. Instead you don't want to "stroke our ego," and you start of your quest for answers with flames against the company running the site you're posting on. Then when someone tells you that he's pulled himself up from his bootstaps and made a nice little living as an indie developer, you tell him to go away. Remember: This is much more his site than it is yours. Your lack of respect for everyone on this site is just sickening.

DAVE STROCKER: "This is much more his site than it is yours."

You Linux People live in a Fantasy World and are sooo incredibly childish! Thank god people can see and read your posts and how you HAD TO INVESTIGAT ME! You should be ashamed and when people see your posts they will be shocked at you!

Hype could, infact, be deception. Like someone hyping skills they do not have.

However, there is no reason to believe that all hype is deception. Microsoft hyped the hell outta the XBox and actually develivered a product.

What exactly are your problems with GG's hype? Or your problems with the license agreement? You've stated that you don't like it, but never really said why.

Dave, I have no problem with agreement. I have NO PROBLEM WITH GARAGE GAMES. I have no problems with anything except you.

I do have a problem with you and your childess responses like "this is more whine, whine his site then mine, whine, whine." and things like searching for everything I did and reporting it... YOU HAVE A WEB SITE, illllllll. LOL!

Most people who have posted are pretty lame but you disgust me and GROSS ME OUT. Please don't let me have to call your mother. I am not responding to you again. Thank god people (and the police) can see your posts.

Why? Nothing he's said or done is illegal.
The WHOIS Database is a public database to look at.
IF YOU DONT WANT PEOPLE CHECKING IT, DONT INCLUDE THE INFORMATION TO CHECK IT WITH! Sheesh. Now go get your "Business Programmer" self away from the forums.

As for Hype and Deception

I picked up on this and thought I would chime in. I don't think these are the same thing. This is a grey area in marketing and in business.

I find the hype here on GaragreGames to be no more or less deceptive than the rest of the industry.

Still working on my longer post...

Haha, you are too funny, but I'm one of those moods tonight I guess. I hope those police don't take my ability to do a whois away from me. You do know what that is right? It took me maybe 5 minutes to get the information that I posted, I'd hardly call that investigating. Infact, I call it "Playing with a troll."

Oh, btw, you do know your address is available via whois, don't you? I would only hope you didn't register it with your home address.

why you would post this:

HERE IS BEYOND ME! What are you trying to prove? Ok, you are cool and an HTML MASTER... WOW! You are GAME PROGRAMMER... YEAH RIGHT! LOL! Please stop wasting time posting here. You obviously disagree with me, I did create the topic, so why don't you go? Bye!
