Pattern-based software sequencer

I'm looking for a software sequencer which is pattern-based. What I mean is, I want to create musical patterns (8 measures, 16 measures, etc.) and then mix them around in real-time. I may stay on Pattern A for awhile, then decide to move to B by clicking on it and so on.
I have this ability with Ensoniq's ESQ-1 on-board sequencer and is really great for composing and live situations, but I no longer use it due to so many other limitations. I have been using an on-board sequencer from a different synth for nearly 15 years, but it does not have this ability.
I now want to move to a software sequencer. From looking at things like Cakewalk and Fruity Loops, I can't quite tell whether or not they have this ability.
It is a terrific way to find out the flow of things and to jam out without having to create a fixed song.

Make sure you do use outside VST instruments though if you decided to use FL Studio. There's alot of us who can recognize FL presets (instruments like 3xosc, TS404, DrumSynth, etc.).
Although it is quite fun to play guess the preset, lol
Good luck with your search. Go online and read forums to find what people say about each software, that's the best way to go.
You can also visit www.kvraudio.com/ to search sequencers, instruments, effects, etc.
If you want to listen to music created with FL Studio, drop by my page. FL Studio is now at version 7 I think, and I've been using version 4.51 for all these years, guess I'm old school:

Fruity Loops is exactly what that does - it's all pattern based music creation. There's a live mode where the song just starts and you drop in patterns where you want them to be. It can get hard if you have several patterns you want to drop at once and only a little time to do so, but if everything's in one pattern it'll work. Plus it's price is cheap, and if you get the online version I believe you're entitled to free updates. I've never used Cakewalk before so I can't tell you about that, but FL Studio is probably the easiest to use software, and once you learn how to use the mixer board and add VST effects and instruments, you can make it sound as professional as your knowledge is.Make sure you do use outside VST instruments though if you decided to use FL Studio. My first issue is I need to get a 2x2 MIDI interface. Either the EMU XMidi or MIDMAN Midisport. The EMU is under $50 right now at Amazon. Any recommendations?
As far as sound presets, I used to make most of my own sounds but once I started getting rackmounts, it just became difficult to edit sounds on such a small screen. I'm really looking forward to using VST instruments.

Thanks for the info. I have actually played a bit with Buzz. I will definitely take a better look at FruityLoops. I downloaded a demo probably four years ago and have sort of been watching them every once in awhile. My first issue is I need to get a 2x2 MIDI interface. Either the EMU XMidi or MIDMAN Midisport.
