The best way to learn TGB is to do a bunch of tutorials. I haven't read the book though, so hopefully someone who has can give you their opinion. I have heard though that it is useful for understanding the GUI, but there are tutorials for that too.

Hate to be the voice of dissention here, but this all depends on which version of TGB you plan to be using. Most of the tutorial resources currently on TDN were written for 1.1.1, which already makes them out of date.
Granted, most of even these will work in 1.1.3, but if you want to use 1.5, at least half the TDN resources won't work.

Example one would be the old RTS tutorial on TDN. This was written in 1.1.1, and seems to work for 1.1.3, but 1.5's GUI engine seems to be different enough that the RTS tutorial code will not function at all.

I'm not trying to dissuade you, just be aware that relying on the tutorials alone *could* make things very slow to learn.

Yes

I understand that, that is why I am still using 1.3 and not beta 1.5.

BTW I have updated the mini platformer tutorial (for 1.3) on TDN and also demo of the updated game..
