Orcas, Vista, and DX10 oh my

Well now that Vista is upon us I was currious about the plans of fellow community members and their experience with these new technologies, as well as GG's plans for them.

Orcas, "Visual Studio 2008" : If any of you have tried adding a Vista Compatible Icon to you build you have noticed that it fails. This is because the new iconf files for the new OS are not compatible with VS2005. This is I'm sure not the only thing that is difernt when make "Vista Friendly" builds, but it is one that I have come accross. So my question is this has anyone tried downloading the Beta and compiling TGEA with it.?
if you are interested in giving it a shot go hereClick Here

Vista is now the new target for games especial those of us using TGEA as our base. If you are working on a project today it most likely if completed gonna about another year. and this comming January MS will stop selling XP completly. So it would be wise to make sure our app as vista friendly now. From what I have read D3D 10 is quite something to behold. I have seen some stuff running on it in the local compusas and bestbuys and I must say, the games comming out that are utilizing this new technology are just incredible.

Direct X 10 : You gotta admit DirectX 10 is pretty sweet. I did notice that there is a DX10 SDK out now. as anyone tried building TGEA under DX10? Perhaps someone from the staff can comment on when DX10 will be officially supported. June2007 DX9-10SDK

and just a side note well more of a question really. SMP and 64bit... Has anyone sucsessfully used this?I think it would be very cool esspecially since 2+ cores is now the norm. and as for 64bit well while not a necessity as 32 bit version will run on a 64bit machine. some of us are not making game but rather application and all of that extra ram I for one would LOVE to be able to use.

Those of you resistant to change don't flame me to bad.

thanks,

James Brad Barnette

I think direct x 9 will live a little longer.. until windows xp is completely out of use.. and every person in the world has a direct x 10 card and windows vista...

i think this will take looong... because not everybody has the money to change video card and power supply every 3-6 months ... and vista.. well it is not the best os in the world hahaha

in the meantime.. just the hardcore gamers will be like an elite society...and a real minority

not flame was intenden, just my opinion :o)

edit:there is directx 10 preview sdks since last december or febraury.. if its not programmed to run as direct x 10 with its appropiate methods .. compiling it with this sdk's will not make TGEA use directx 10 new features.. just use the latest dx 9 runtime :o)

Cheers

June SDK includes DX 9.0Ex headers from my understanding too, so one could in theory do a 9.0Ex specific change to their build for Vista.. otherwise, no real big issue.

I'm not sure I understand the "vista compatible icon", as our icons show and look great in Vista, including stuff used for GDF/Games Explorer functionality

Yes But the new Vista Full color png compressed icons @ 256x256x32 are not supported by visual studio 2005. they will not compile.

What is GDF?

@DodongoXP: I think you are missing my point. perhaps I didn't phrase the question correctly. What I mean is will GG start now and start getting ready for these things or will be business as usual where GG adds support for things a year or so after they become mainstream. I remember when getting them to to support the new visual studio.net was like pulling teeth it had been out for what seemed like a couple years before they "officially" supported it. As a matter of fact I think it wasn't untime VS2003 came out and MS announced that VC6 would no longer supported. it would just be nice to see them take proactive inact new technologies as they are emerging instead of when everyone has moved on to something else and they have to.

don't get me wrong in the last year they have made great strides. I'm just currious if the past will repeat itself now that this industry "windows gaming" is turning a new corner.

I'm learning to program myself it is something I have not done since school "3D Artist by profession" but there are just to many things that I feel if I want them done I will just have to do them myself.

Anyway I hope that when the time comes GG is ready.

As for Vista I know lots of people that have switched already. many of witch didn't buy new machines or video cards most have Gf7 series or better. But still that being said most of them are VERY happy with vistas performance. the only games that are suffering performace issuse are those that do not use D3D. "Which is very few these days." Most D3D game are running Very fast under vista. Many of them has said that thing are actually faster under vista. Not all things but D3D applications run Very quick under vista.

Anyway there are some nifty features under DirectX 10 and just becasue there are not alot of people with DX 10 cards does not mean that they features should not be added. If anything that means that now is the time to do before everyone has the hardware and it is just expected. This also avoids the wingin later down the road where everyone will be fussing because TGEA doesn't support this or that . I simple think that a more proactive approach is better for GG and the community.

I guess the unreal engine is a bad example but do you think that they or any other commercial engine would wait till everyinoe has DX 10 cards and DirectX 11 is out before they start adding direct X 10 features to their engine?

Again this is just my opinion, and all I want to do is give you something to think about. I'm honestly hopeing that someone from GG will comment.

well happy developing to all,
