Keeping the "// Torque Game Engine" and Sierra comments..
by John Eder · in Torque Game Engine · 07/18/2002 (7:59 am) · 15 replies
I was curious if it was okay to remove the commented section out of each file in the Torque engine:
//-------------------------------------------------------
// Torque Game Engine
//
// Copyright (c) 2001 GarageGames.Com
// Portions Copyright (c) 2001 by Sierra Online, Inc.
//-------------------------------------------------------
Any insight on this would be helpful. Thanks.

Why?

Because I want to put all of my information right there.

I would imagine they have that in there for a reason. ;)

But then again, you license the source..so maybe they do allow you to remove it!

I suggest you mention somewhere that this code is part Sierra part GarageGames, because it is. I'm no legal expert so don't take my word. Look at the GPL, for instance. They explicitly say in their license to not remove any comments *and* to provide a copy of the license with any code modifications. However, I am unsure if the TGE license has anything like that. I'd e-mail Jeff.

whats the big deal? most ppl that look at that stuff are going to be coders any ways, and will be able to tell if it yours or ggs cuz they have the same thing. Just add your info below or above ggs if you edit the file, that way ppl wont think your an idiot for puutting your info on something you had nothing todo with.

This is a simple yes or no thread. I don't to hear all the other jargon that's going on. If you don't want to answer, don't post a reply. Replies are the answer to a question.

Oh, and by the way, GG had the ethical fortitude to mention that it was part Sierra (see that little copyright thingy???? them there's kinda important).
Darn, I didn't respond with a yes or no answer. I'll smack my own wrist.

Ok, I'll reply. Even if it is OK, it's incredibly unprofessional and any true developer would know this. Credit should be give where credit is due.Oh, and by the way, GG had the ethical fortitude to mention that it was part Sierra (see that little copyright thingy???? them there's kinda important).

We don't all have the answers, but we do have suggestions.

If you don't want replies with suggestions as to what you should do to try and find the answer to your question then I suggest you do not post at all.

Just because Valve/Sierra purchased the Quake 1/2 Engine Source doesn't give them the right to call it their own.. which they didn't.
The same applies to you in the case of the Torque Game Engine.

Ryan, I'm not trying to be rude in anyway but I did ask for help from an employee. From what I have seen in the forums, employees do post and was hoping to get a response from them since this is the licensing section. It was my assumption that the employees would have the best knowledge of all the license information. Then I was bombarded with "Why's" and "That's stupid" (not in those words but basically). The reason I asked is because of curiosity, not to make it seem like I created the engine. To prove that, any game that is made with it has to be sold through Garage Games anyway so it would mean I made it in Torque because I'm sure they would make that knowledgeable to the public to sell more copies of Torque.
Thank you Robert for your reply. You're the only one who could actually answer the question I asked. And I also thank you for being polite about it.

As for the 'that's stupid' or 'why?' comments, I cannot, in anyway, force people to not post their opinion. Just keep in mind that I've been suggesting you contact one of the GG employees not discreditng your post.

The employees sometimes can't get back to you quickly in the forums which is why I suggested e-mailing Jeff. Again, you still won't have the correct answer (for sure, anyway) until you hear it from one of the GG guys.As for the 'that's stupid' or 'why?' comments, I cannot, in anyway, force people to not post their opinion.
