Memory issues with TGB

by Argiris Bendilas · in Torque Game Builder · 05/22/2007 (7:37 am) · 5 replies

Hello,

Is it normal for the fish game demo to takes 315mb of ram as a build game? I have the same problem with my game. It is 10 times bigger than the fish demo in content and class and takes maximum 800mb!!! Could anyone tell me why such a lot memory usage?

I have made some observations today.

My imageMap datablocks are loaded at startup. For some reason, TGB never takes the same amount of RAM when it starts. Some times it takes 170MB, others 70MB and some others it goes over 200MB. These assets are 480 in number and they take 10MB on disk.

During my testings, I saw that TGB optimize its memory when the window is minimized and when it is restored it doesn't return to the previous amount of RAM. Some times it runs very slowly, but frequently it runs very smoothly.
The game "Flower shop - Big City Break" is built with Torque and it takes around 70MB of RAM, maximum. The minimize trick still works here with the same effects.

Is there a problem with memory handling in TGB and is there a garbage collector that we could use? What exactly happens when the window is minimized?

I am looking forward to hearing your ideas.

I have to publically say that I'm really disappointed with TGB's support. We moved from Flash to Torque so we could supposedly achieve more, but it's been really painful and the lack of any substantial support makes it really hard for us to have a smooth production.

I was under the impression that the Torque community is very active and helpful but these forums seem to be almost dead!

Pity...

Hi Argiris

There's a lot of activity in the private forums. The public forums are not that active and I guess all members are responsible for it. I'm really sorry that you are having such difficulties and I'm sorry I can't be of assistance.

TGB is a good tool, I believe that with the right project it's the perfect tool, but it does not fit all gamedev (like any other 3rd party software)

I hope you get the support you need and your problems are solved.

Ricardo, thank you for your reply.

I found out about the private forums today by mistake really, as you can see in my post there.

I'm still waiting from someone from Garage games to reply to my support ticket. It's been 6 days already...
