Dumb Question about 3d modelling pay.

I've done a lot of modelling for my own projects, but never for anyone else. I thought I'd look into doing some modelling work for extra cash. I just bought TGEA, so I'm still learning about exporting into dts and such, but when I'm ready to start looking for some modelling work, I'm not sure what to expect. I was reading the job opportunities section and I noticed that sometimes people take bids - and obviously they won't say, "THIS is how much we're paying for models". My question is, when I'm ready, and I have samples for show and everything, around how much should I expect to make? Assuming my work is good and I know what I'm doing, but I don't have any job experience or references yet.... I have no idea what I should ask for. What kind of deal would a person typically be able to expect? Just some sort of range or a ballpark idea is all I'm asking for. Thanks :)

Are you looking to work purely in this (GG) environment or work in other development circles?

We would really need to see a good online portfolio and then we could comment on what you could ask for on an object/asset basis.

It totally depends on what your situation is to be honest.

Most teams have no money to invest in a long-term artist. So they will look to see if you want to participate and get a cut of the profits at the end if/when the game is sold.

Some teams will look to trade services.

The teams that do have money will likely be looking for you to quote them either on a per task basis. Just give the team the final cost it will take to make the model, base this off of how many hours you think it will take and the hourly rate that you think you are worth (which is totally depent on your cost of living, experiance and how fast you have to get the work done). If you are going to get a lot of work from the team you can of course cut them more of a break on the cost.

Like Ric says, get yourself a good webpage setup with lots of images of the best work that you are able to do to help promote/sell yourself to prespective teams. After that showcase some of you work and pick up small jobs and grow from there.
