Digital Recorders

by Benjamin McMillan · in Technical Issues · 07/16/2002 (12:41 am) · 5 replies

I'm trying to get some stuff started for recording ambient sounds for the game and some ones that will be mixed for other effects.

I've looked but I don't really know where to find the following:

A Mac compatible digital recorder (USB)

A microphone that will plug into that but that is designed for picking up ambient sound and not vocal.

I've got the stuff needed to mix the sounds once they're downloaded to the computer.

Any feedback would be much apreciated.
Thanks

Ben

I'll be using a Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox with a powered mic made for digital recording. Lot's of hard drive space and it records in wav format.

Edit: Should mention it's USB, not sure about Mac compatibility.

How are you gonna use that condenser mic on a nomad? You'll need a preamp.

It's actually an amplified mic, so no problems there. I noticed they're not easy to find though.

There are also mini/portable preamps and mics available through
www.soundprofessionals.com

This one is pretty good:

I run a condenser through a little mackie board, then from the tape outs (or main outs, whichever you prefer) to the 1/8 inch line in jack in the computer. If I need to be portable, I'll either take the whole computer (this should be easy with the new macs; I think I want to get one) or run the mixer into a DAT machine, then dump it to the computer off of the DAT later. I have to run noise reduction to get rid of hiss once the wav is on the computer. It seems to be working so far though.
