Having them outlined loses a lot of the affect and ends up making the lettering look forced. So, I here tried to make the lighting easier on the eyes, by both offering lettering that's not as bright, and by making one word brighter than the other slightly. Hopefully that will ease up on the strain of identifying the key elements of the image.

Phil I like this a lot, here as an artist is how i would build on a fantastic initial design, build the whole lot as a high poly 3d scene, add a lens flare on the axe edge and create shadows on the axe create high detail textures and render it, save the render as an image file. this may seem a lot of work, but the result, would be worth the effort.
you would also have a great deal of scope for manipulating the scene and producing new renders quickly in order to adjust the image/logo.
Just my 2 cents worth.

@eli: imho, benjamin is right, the letters could use some outline and maybe some "bumpmap" on it (like pascal's above). and i woul rather change the yellowish backlight to a color other than the letter's on your second version. and maybe resize the logo (shield??) in the background.

Yeah, Pascal, I haven't received anything from you since the first request. Very odd. Hope my hotmail account isn't going tits up. :\ I guess try again and let me know here after you send them off.

I haven't been able to get online in a week due to ISP upgrades...

Do you mean that the text should have more substance to it? (It should be more than simply light, but more of a texture?)

And I actually did make a few more versions with different colors. Which do you suggest?

Need more feedback to really get an idea of what's wanted as a logo, really...

But anyway, here's pretty much the same thing with a more textured text:

[edit]: Okay, I'm having a horrible time trying to host images ANYWHERE. I reformatted and since the program I use to do this won't work properly. (Apparently their site changed.)

[edit again:] Since Angelfire is a stupid piece of crap, just go here and look at the only thing on the page:

I like the one logo that is just the text on the black background, because it's cleaner. I think when you start adding to many effects images tend to start looking cluttered and less professional.

Why not use the text on the black background like Pascal(I think it was him, can't see the thread I'm replying to though) did, but add the round logo that is in the background of the other designs to the bottom left hand corner? Then Bob's your uncle, you have a totally cool logo.
