Me and a few of my friends decided it would be pretty cool to program and generate a game. Being all freshmen in high school, I was wondering if this book could help a few clueless programmers that only know basic and java to create a program.

Thank you very much for that response, it really helped me and my friends make our decision! We tried all there was to try, and thirst for more. We are looking into this book, and we'll see how things go out. Thanks a lot!

The Torque engine is not great for the average 'dreamer noob'. However, dedicated beginners who are willing to dig, explore and learn can do some amazing things with this engine. Which group you and your friends belong to is really up to you.
Download the demo, tinker with it, check out the scripting language, play with the GUI editor (F10), move stuff around with the world editor (F11) and read everything you can get your hands on. If you feel comfortable with the engine after a few weeks/months of that, then consider pooling your resources and buying a license for TGE.
Only one person should have access to the C++ source code though (cpp, cc, h, obj). So you will want to make sure you stay legal. But everyone on the team can have access to script files (cs), mission files (mis), UI files (gui), etc.
I hope that helps.
Good luck and have fun.
