Trouble with Leaves on Tree.

by Tyler Slabinski · in Artist Corner · 04/21/2007 (2:18 pm) · 50 replies

EDIT: New title

Old title was "How to Make Flat Images"

It seems like the tree is closer to the camera then the leaves, but... well let me show you here.

Well that's wierd. There must be a problem though. Is there a tutorial for blender on leaves?

You don't need a specific tutorial on leaves, just on using UV maps and alpha channels. Start with something simple as I mentioned above and use that to learn with. Once you master that, move on to more complex shapes, perhaps by looking at the trees in the Torque example maps and see how they were built.

Hey Tyler, I found this tutorial on making a fur hood. It uses UV textures and alpha channels. The process is the same as what you would use for your tree:
UV textures and Alpha Channels

This site seems a good stop for tracking down good Blender Tutorials. Hope it all helps :)
Blender Nation

Wish I could be more help.

Thank you very much. Although I followed that tutorial and it didn't help. I'm going to look through some more.

I have an idea! Can someone make a tree in blender format and I'll compare them to see what's wrong?

The problem you are having is Z-sorting.

Because the torque doesn't know which order to draw, it draws the leaves BEHIND the tree object.

I don't know blender, but this is what i would do in lightwave
Try this. Make the leaves one object
Then make the tree trunk another.

Then, parent the leaves to the trunk object.

Exporting both.

that fixes the Z-Sorting issue using lightwave.

...................................................................................................................................................YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been trying to do this forever! Thank you!

Now this is my first tree!!!

(I can't believe that all I needed to do was make the leaves a parent). :-)
