STG: a simple idea....

How about a game which has a few simple gametypes, a few simple weapons, a couple vehicles (mostly for transport), and a lot of excellent artistic work and level design?
How about a game which is EXTREMELY friendly to mapper and mod development, and thus promises to be a great platform for developers and players to really keep growing as a game community?
How about a game which is oriented primarily around mapper and server OPTIONS - so that some basic gameplay elements exist across the game, but that the game itself is designed as a platform for mappers and creative developers to make amazing stuff?
Well, some of us have been talking for MANY months about such ideas.
On the one hand, I was debating with Akira (T2 mapper) about how to push "tribes" ctf in new ways. I was also working with Zod on SG-1 (T2) and debating how to best develop non-jetpack gameplay. And most critically, Nefilim and myself have dreamed for many months of a new game which could harness some key elements we've seen across many games... and give us a platform to map, develop, and love gaming.
Nefilim said... "let's do it," and so here we are.
STG is the game. We just posted an Ad for a lead programmer.
STG
Our game idea is very simple, with familiar elements from many games.
Our vision goes beyond just jeeps and players running around in CTF and VIP/Escort gametypes. Our vision implies further growth by engaging the wider development community into joining the fun. Yes, we want this to be fun... immediately.
If we're stuck in beta for a year, so be it, as long as it is FUN the whole time... and we keep making little steps.
The dev team has some familiar faces for those around T2 and Torque. We plan to expand, and would love to talk shop about what's possible.
In the end, I expect us to have a working, VERY simple beta done very soon.
Garage bands don't plan forever and hide in their garage for years upon years.
Garage bands make music cuz they love it and they must. They invite hot chicks (or guys) over and jam all the time.
We are not afraid to make mistakes, as long as it's based in fun. We will test this game... the old fasioned way.
Anyways, thought i'd post here.
- vehicles: 3 person jeep (light gun) & air transport
- one player class, small selection of weapons (including anti-vehicle rockets)
- additional enhancements such as jet boosts (boba fett style, limited use); shields; etc.
- gametypes are going to be: ctf; vip/escort; and, some hunting, team death match gametype
We would love to see a community rally around this in beta form. Ideally, this would be a place where folks could get excited about an idea and work together to make it happen in a map or two.
Example: Wow, it would be cool to have AI Animals and hunt them in jeeps - DONE!
There are many ideas which do not need to be full games. There are talented people everywhere who would love to find an active community with a working, fun game as a platform.
Well, here we go... !!!

I really envision this game to end up a playground for developers who like the futuristic genre. The core team will seek to carry this into beta and beyond, but...
... a good, fun game is going to require open ToDo lists and lots of talented people doing spontaneous stuff (textures, level design, prefabs, cool new gadgets).
Gliders? That would be cool for a map.
Trams like in Wolf? That would be cool for mapping.
A set of water transports and buildings? Definately.
We plan to have the design expand with our community, but for now we're staying focused on the core elements and structures.
Glad you dig it. =)

We are still looking for a lead programmer. We've talked with several people from T2 community (zod, panama jack, kinetic poet), but they are all tied to major projects at the moment.
We need somebody who seems this framework as a great opportunity to build a vision and make it happen.

I would love to work on this in anyway i could. Even if its just ideas. Im currently working on Porting the Stargate T2 Mod you mentioned to torque (Small world after all :)).
