Blame it on the videogames

"Virginia Tech mass murderer Cho Seung Hui honed his skill as a deadly marksman by playing violent video games.

According to Washington Post Staff Writer David Cho, several Korean youths who knew Cho Seung Hui from his high school days said he was a fan of violent video games, particularly a game called "Counterstrike," a hugely popular online game in which players join terrorism or counterterrorism groups and try to shoot each other using all types of guns.

And playing these violent games can do more than help a player improve his skills, they can help transform him from a player to a killer, psychologists say."

When will it stop!?!?!?!?

"The Post noted that the authors recalled that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold enjoyed playing violent video games, and they speculated that these games played a role in their violent acts at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado in April of 1999.

Eric Harris had actually modified a version of the game Doom and placed it on his Website. In his version, there were two shooters, extra weapons, and the other people in the game couldn't shoot back. He and Klebold essentially acted-out their version of Doom on innocent classmates."

Tell you what, post here a link of this "lemming effect" from any creditable person that have a good reason to write a research paper on this subject, hopefully something relating to sociology.

And i do agree with you many people will simply take SOMEONE ELSE explanation or reason for the way things are, without thinking for them selfs. "Yes, keep an open mind is something every adult should do.", as i said before, and "Humans are not Lemmings, and you can not use a small % of people that do not think and act for themselves as proof that we are Lemmings."

I have never heard of your "lemming effect" theory of human sociology. But i have read about something called the "Ostrich Syndrome"...

NEWLY RELEASED STUDIES show that Adam and Eve had spent years bot farming in World of Warcraft which trained them to eat fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Video games have been fucking humanity over since the begining!!

You have to remember there's far more stupid people in the world then intelligent people. And stupid people want to blame anything they can as for why the world/people go wrong. There's many things that fall into this category. Movies are one that face the same judgement as violent video games. TV as well, there was a period where wrestling was extra popular and some very unintelligent kids decided to hit each other with chairs or jump off the roof of their house with a flying elbow onto a kid laying on a picnic table. Wrestling got blamed (no I'm not a fan of wrestling but it's moronic to blame it) because the kids were too stupid to realise they used stunt chairs and acted out the moves.

One of the biggest forces behind stopping gambling in this country is the fact some people get addicted to it and ruin their lives. Millions more gamble responsibly but because a very small percentage of people have addictive personalities and gamble away all their money the rest shouldn't be allowed to have that freedom. Despite the fact these same addictive personalities can get addicted to shopping/eating/drugs/alcohol or any other thing and ruin their lives in that way, gambling must be the evil reason why though.

The US will always have too many people who don't want to take responsibility for their actions, and parents who want to blame their children's problems on other things. The guy, like the columbine kids, had a destructive personality. If anything the computer games pushed back the time till when they actually burst giving people more time to help them. Since they were getting their feelings out in the games. People also highly underestimate how easy it is to shoot a gun especially at close range and even more so with a pistol. You don't need a video game for that.

I was in the navy for 6 years and had expert marksman qualification, thing was I got expert qualification on pistols the first time I shot. the bullets go in a straight line, aim at something and shoot. Video games don't give peopel super human gun accuracy especially since it's rare to find a game that aims guns realistically.

It's a fact that people will have to deal with for a long long time. Until the unintelligent parts of society get educated into how people actually work there will always be blame tossed on things such as video games.

Let's also not blame the people who saw a distraught kid and picked on him to push him over the edge, those people are innocent people who weren't educated enough to spot a self destructive personality on the verge of breaking. And oc course picking on the weaker ones is fun so let's not teach people to stop that either. It's the video games

The guy was crazy. He killed people he was envious of and he did it to get attention. Then he shot himself in the face because he didn't want to get ass raped in prison for the rest of his life. Crazy enough to get attention, not crazy enough to subject himself to prison showers.

Video games... why don't they just grab some pitch forks and torches and go after the town Jew. That's the way of idiots. Blame the innocent but financially successful minority so that the real problems are never addressed. That's called compounding a horrible tragedy with injustice.

@J Sears

I want to agree that most people are in fact stupid, but I don't think it's true. I wish it were as simple as that. I think that some people accept that video games carry some blame because that's is a solution that doesn't require any change for anyone but the scapegoat. But most people roll their eyes.

The truth is that this guy was going to go killer nuts at some point... if he were married with kids, probably on them. Could this have been prevented? Absolutely. This wasn't some annonymous terrorist attack. This was a fucked up guy who wanted attention. He didn't snap overnight. People could have seen that he would hurt someone. But how hard is it to get anyone in authority to give a shit? Nearly impossible.

I was a foster kid and horrible shit happens to children all the time and there's nothing anyone can do about it, because it's not important until it's too late. That's the sad truth of this. Video games? They are this months flavor of simple meaning for complex tragedy.

I think it's an honor to be the target of national blame...that's when you know you're cool...like rock music in the 60s, or rap in the 80s and 90s...if you're pulling the spotlight, eventually you'll get blamed for something.

It's like a hazing ritual, as the industry becomes main stream.

Maybe we should be blaming ginger bread men. Eating one is like simulating biting off someones head... that's pretty violent.

I think you're on to something there, Richard. That's extreme violence for you. I start with the legs because I like to torture them.

I think it really all comes down to animal on animal violence. It's everywhere nowadays. When I was a kid there was much less exposure to animal on animal violence. Your cat might catch a mouse and torture it for a while before killing it and eating it. But now days. You can see all kinds of animal violence on these educational shows. Educational! Call them what they are! Brainwashing shows to innundate children's minds with images of real death and violence and torture. Damn educational shows!! Damn them!!!!!

Breaking News
10 Ginger Bread People were chowed down in cold crumbs today as a recovering Ginger-holic snapped and went on a crunch-a-thon.

"It was 'orrible I tells ya. First 'e bit off their legs so they couldn't run then slowly devoured them. Whole! Not a crumb left", a witness to the carnage told this reporter.

"Everyone knows how fast Ginger Bread People are, it's obvious this perpetrator planned his strategy carefully. Most likely using games like "Grand Chef Ginger Man" with the "Hot Coffee and Biscuts" hack", Chief Head Shrinker Smith postulated. So it must be true!

"I blame the parents. Diet is everything, they should pay more attention", says the Vicar of the Holy Gumdrops Church of Pasadena.

Where will it end? Are your kids likely to Ginger Snap? [Take our survey and find out]

*edit: spelling believe it or not :P
