An idea from a Q3 mod of mine

I don't like levels it does kind of make it tough for new players joining a server to feel like they can fully participate, now I haven't seen anywhere that realmwars is going to include levels, but this kind of genre attracts levelling (in the more classic sort) like baldrick attracts flies.
Anyway back to the point. I created a short-lived Q3 mod where there was levelling in 2 senses, classic levelling, which kind of worked but was tough if you joined halfway through and specialisation levelling. Basically every weapon you can use when used effectively (i.e you hit something) gained some experience, at pre-defined points the weapons various stats, in q3's case Rate Of fire, Damage & Splash Damage, and Projectile Speed increased, this meant that even new people joining the server could rise in levels, even if they failed to kill that person as each point of damage awarded experience. Anyway so where am I going, it worked very well, I managed to get some team games up, and whilst everyone had access to everything you would start to see support players appearing, as well as harrassing players, simply because of the weapons they had managed to train up to a devastating level, and suddenly from an even playing field different play styles became very apparent, you would have people training the gauntlet up, because it only had the damage stat to train, whereas more aggressive players could train up on of the other weapons, this meant you would see people gaining gauntlet kills with a reasonable regularity against enemies with weapons, as the gauntlet trained more quickly than the rocket launcher, because of its fewer stats. I think this weapon training could be encorporated into realm wars as a method of rewarding clever weapon use, and would prevent one man armies, as whilst say class a could use 8 different weapons, it is likely that only 3 would be trained to a reasonable level.
Sorry this was a little meandering.

In Realm Wars we could have the same thing as you said for ranged combat and for hand to hand we could have the players increace defence, also.
