TGE 1.5.1 Crashes computer (Solved/Remedied!)

by Leroy Frederick · in Torque Game Engine · 04/12/2007 (7:19 am) · 7 replies

Hiya all,
Basically, im a bit sad at the moment as one of my garage tools aren't working :-( I've only upgraded only 2 days and have yet to even see the new demo or enter any starter kits :-(

When I start torqueDemo.exe, it crashes my computer (I've spent a whole day trying), as in DBS (Dreaded Blue Screen, the equivalent of windows exploding, but without the smoke and fire)

This is a brief of what the console says and where the crash seems to occur:
Quote:
--------- Initializing MOD: Torque Demo Client ---------
Compiling demo/client/ui/customProfiles.cs...
Loading compiled script demo/client/ui/customProfiles.cs.
Loading compiled script common/client/message.cs.
Loading compiled script common/client/mission.cs.
Loading compiled script common/client/missionDownload.cs.
Loading compiled script common/client/actionMap.cs.
Video Init:
On the blue screen I got the following numbers 0x0000008E (0x876E000C,0XB4357B3F,0X00000000)

I've got the latest DirectX 9.0c, Windows XP sp2 (Home Edition) and all the updates etc, NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE (Onboard with latest updated drivers), AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.16GHz), 1.23 GB Ram

I've already tried updating drivers, testing other OpenGL, D3D applications (Bear in mind constructor and showTool work as well as TGB/TGB 1.5). I also tried re-building the torqueDemo.exe both as a release exe and debug exe. Nothing has worked!

Any ideas, and when is 1.5.2 update due?

Oh, just wanted to add, I've upgraded my graphics card from the NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE (Onboard) to a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS PCI E dedicated graphics card (512mb), with latest drivers. While performance of other opengl/directx games/applications have doubled to tripled, TGE still just crashes :-(

Hello Leroy, sorry to hear you are having problems. I would like you to try something to rule out any recent changes in 1.5.1 as the culprit, then we can go from there. I am sending you the TGE 1.5.0 demo and would like you to install it and see if it runs for you. After you do so, please respond here with results or feel free to email me directly.

Hi Kenneth,

I forget to add this information after testing today, 1.4.2 doesn't work (it use to). I can only think it doesn't like something about my motherboard (which I change around late last year). I'll give you guys the information of my motherboard in case this might help in some way 'GIGABYTE i-DNA K8N51PVM9-RH - NVIDIA Business Platform'.

I'll try the download you provided tomorrow, although I'm expecting i'll see the dreaded blue screen again! I've even tried setting my motherboard to Fail Safe mode. It's strange because every other torque product I own works (Constructor, TGB 1.1.3 / 1.5, ShowTool, Toque X), along with other demanding DirectX/OpenGL Applications and Games (Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, Unreal 2004 @ full spec etc)

Oh well, let's see what happens!

Ok, I've tried it, same difference unfortunately :( There's just something you guys put in TGE that my setup is just not feeling for whatever purpose?

Here's a grab of the bottom half of the console and how far the console came to before the crash from the demo:

OpenAL Driver Init:

This is the 1.5.1 console log:
Quote:

Compiling common/client/messageBox.cs...
Loading compiled script common/client/messageBox.cs.

Compiling common/client/help.cs...

OpenAL Driver Init:
It seems to be crashing at the 'OpenAL Driver Init:', which is strange, cause before the graphics card upgrade, i'm sure it was at the 'Video Init:' section a little further up (as seen in the first post above).

EDIT: I'm gonna try updating my soundcard drivers and/or temporarily removing/replacing the 'OpenAL32.dll' and see if any of those work...

Thanks for the info. Also try temporarily disabling the sound card from within device manager if you will and see what happens. I will check this thread in the morning and we'll go from there. Thanks for your patience working through this! :)

Hallelujah, I've got working, only problem is, without the presents of the 'OpenAL32.dll', I would be left with no sound I imagine! I continued to focus on the graphics card drivers after updating, but I no longer checked the console until now to see it was the openal dll.

Next thing I'm gonna try is placing the TGB 'OpenAL32.dll' instead (since it works and there different versions), then I'll try the soundcard driver update and see if it accepts the new version of the dll...

EDIT: Will do, thanks for your help :0)

YES! YES! YES! All is working now, sound and all, so let me summarise in case anyone else has similar problems.

1. Make sure you have the latest DirectX installed
2. Update your graphics drivers, restart. Update your sound card (yes, even the sound card can cause crashes) drivers, restart.
3. Uninstall TGE, restart, Install, restart and try again
4. Run TGE and check the 'console.log' if your still having problems to try to help identify what the problem might be

*If the above doesn't work, you may need to upgrade your graphics card like I did (although TGE is meant to be compatible with voodoo3 if I remember rightly. Perhaps you may need to update your sound card if you have it's latest drivers and it still crashes at 'OpenAL Driver Init:' from the console.log
*If you can't afford to do that, you can take the dll's from TGB and place them into TGE, it worked for me with the 'OpenAL32.dll', but I don't know the implications of using an older version of dll as in this case.

*NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE (Onboard) with the latest drivers may not be compatible with TGE, but someone else may have to confirm that
*Soundblaster Audigy Drivers need to be updated to latest or you may get the blue screen like I did. Before the update, the sound is rendered through software, but now it's rendered through SB Audigy Audio with EAX show in the extension sections

Thanks again Kenneth

So there it is, I'm officially back in the TGE club, well, to a degree anyway, I guess I have to make something first but my TGB skills should hopefully transfer well :)
