George R.R. Martin / A Song of Ice and Fire fans?

Greetings all,

I may have acquired the authors rights to produce an online non-commercial title using IP from "A Song of Ice and Fire", an epic fantasy series which has spawned a board game, roleplaying game and popular card game. For those of you who don't know about it http://www.georgerrmartin.com, but it is one of the most sucessful fantasy sagas of our times. If I did make a title, it would only be for non-commercial fun and a love of the story, so I wanted to see if there were many fans of the books within this community?

If you're a fan of the books, even if you would be unable to help out, I'd appreciate it if you could post here :) IF you are interested then drop me a line and we can hook up with the author to discuss what might be possible :)

Huge fan here.

"Feast" was mildly disappointing, but that's only natural given the split nature of how he wrote/published the fourth volume. I'm very much looking forward to "Dance".

Yeah agreed, though he has left all the most interesting characters (IMO) till Dance. Should be an exciting read!

Out of curiosity, how did you manage to aquire the rights? Did you send a letter to publishing company, know the author, or have a friend who knows this dude who dated the girlfriend of a publisher who knows the author? Reason I'm asking, is, there are some board games I'd like to covert to online games as well.

It's not confirmed at all in any way shape or form; but I just emailed the author after noticing he gave rights to a MUSH in development.

I'm not even sure It'll work out, and if it does if I'll have the time or resources to make something of it; but I wanted to know if other people were fans of the books :)

I greatly appreciate the storycraft that GRRM applies to his works. However, the only thing that moves me away from game-ifying his works (or playing the table top offerings which I've bought as a collector) is the exceptionally magic poor aspect of his world.

His stories are rich because of their humanist elements and intrigue. The very immersive nature of his style makes for a good read and perhaps may some day translate into bold screenplay. But, high fantasy it is certainly not. With moderate effort, one could transplant his stories into a wild west, modern, post-modern, or futuristic, space-opera backdrop. His style reminds me a lot of Frank Herbert. The environment of his world is so surpurflous, it is hardly noticed.

That is part of the mastery of his work. His heros and villians are so human and believable it is hard not to get into their head and peer out though their eyes--sheer brilliance. The upside of setting a game in the setting is that there are natural scope boundaries that help to focus effort by reducing the expectations in a very significant and time consuming area.

I wish you only the very best of luck. I can imagine the political drama/intrigue that your player base might bring to the table would be magnificant. :-)

Cheers,
Rich Wermske
