Im Thinking about purchasing T2D for my hobbiest game development and im curious about how nessary it is to have the source.
I Know there is definitely some great advantages to haveing it but is T2d flexible enough on its own? What are its shortcomings that having the source remedies? Does the engine on its own work well enough to make a good platform game?
Thanks in advance for your time!

No problem. Once you get the license, just search on the forums for threads talking about suggestions for art tools such as gimp, inkscape and others.Good luck and have fun!

That said, I've really enjoyed having the source and find it's been well worth the investment. Why have I needed to modify the source? Mostly to integrate 3rd party libraries such as sqlite and jabber as well as to make some memory utilization tweaks. That's it really. But it's been very helpful in understanding what's going on under the hood and it is nice knowing I can get down to the metal even I really rarely have to. The script environment is significantly more productive for the vast majority of game development. So, if you can afford it, go for it. If not, don't sweat it too hard.
Regardless of your choice, be sure to invest in a copy of Torsion as it'll make your "hobby" much more fun :)
