Licence key query

Just wanting to ask a question about the licence key:
I read somewhere that the key is created based on your HDD serial (or something similar) and that each time you change hard drives you will need to re-register. Is this the case?
Is it also true that this can only be done a limited number of times?
What steps are being taken to ensure that in the event of GarageGames (or Chronic Logic) closing, the game is still able to be registered and played?
I have never liked licence keys on software myself and would have thought about my purchase a lot more carefully had I known such a restrictive model was being used.
I do understand the desire to copy protect, but as it doesn't work there's not really a point. I myself will obviously be looking for a cracked/fixed version of the gish binary just in case though given it's a non-mainstream game it might not be so easy :P
Note that this isn't an attack in anyway, I just don't want to end up, as I have before, with unusable legit software that I cannot use, while pirates out there have a fully functional copy they haven't even paid for. I wouldn't be nearly as concerned if it was a standard serial (as I initially thought) because even if both companies go bust I can still play this great game.
On a side note, are all GarageGames published games protected under the same licence scheme? I obviously would like to know as it will greatly influence my future purchases.
Thanks.
Todd.

You can always use the offline registration method by visiting: www.garagegames.com/ignition. This page will allow you to download an ignition file that you can place in the folder so you won't need to register online.
Some of our games use the same ignition method, however, some of them are full games and don't require a key after you purchase the game.
