I have an idea for a new game. I need to know the next step to see if it's worth pursuing.

The next step is to tell us what your idea is.

Plan it all out before you start making it. It saves a lot of work in the long run.

Sorry, need to add that I have no experience with the gaming industry whatsoever. All I have is this idea that seems to be pretty cool. Do companies sometimes sponsor your idea?

Nope. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Implementation of the idea is where the actual idea pays off.

Yes, you can't just have an idea, everyone has ideas they all sound great in ones head, but the work involved in putting the idea into action, the planning, the art, programming, storyline, etc... Is what make great ideas, great games.

the world has seen million times that the concept was good but the actual implementation of the idea ends to be utter crap.. i have seen that in movies , in games , in cars , houses in almost everything
how many times have you seen that xx product promises alot.. and when it finally gets released it ends up to be a major dissapointing..
good idea bad implementation .. lost on focus of goals or just bad project organization and administration
everyone has good ideas.. even joking with friends you say alot " it would be cool if xx thing would be that way " .. and everybody says " yeah it would be cool" ...theres another good idea.... but from thinking it would be cool to actually doing it in a practical way.. is a complete diferent thing
thats the real hard job.. because is where.. the idealistic and romantic side meets the practical and realistic side..
and mostly of times there is where everything screws up and fails... hehehe
be sure to have something real before going too serious about.. instead of pure mental concepts
Cheers!

(If you are a developer as well, this next section can be for you. If not, pass it on to your developers)
Once you have designed the game, and have a stable document, try prototyping the core concept in a program. My opinion is to not go "balls to the wall" with development, but making a simple test level showing off the basic game play. If the concept is fun, or what you like, proceed with real development in a fresh code base.
This is very high level of where to start and how to proceed. The game development process can be as simple as a week long demo, or a complex project stretching over years with multiple steps and iterations. Just make sure you are having fun while you are doing this.
