Someone joined my game - Weston who are you?

by Andy Hawkins · in General Discussion · 03/15/2007 (7:32 pm) · 14 replies

So I was testing my Skelly pack level and a player called Weston joined my game. How is that possible??

I didn't promote the game or setup a lobby or anything. Is anyone here called Weston?

If your server was hooked up to GG's master server, then anybody can see your game. TGE automatically tries to download missions and assets that aren't available, because I had the same thing happen to me. Someone must have waited while all the needed assets were downloaded and much to my surprise, they joined my test server.

Weston must be stopped, he is a menace!

Of course if you have made any significant engine changes, all that will happen to these 'guests' is that their client will crash.

Hey Weston,

Where did your website go? I was about to show one of my interns some of your work and I got a 404.

The main concern I have is that people can see my work in progress before it's ready. Also I may be working on private stuff that's not ready for viewing.

So is there a way to block this? What happens if I don't host a server? Will this stop people from joining?

You can have your sever not connect to the master server. Just comment out the code in server/default.cs that adds a master server or add your own master server to the list and still comment out the default one listed. This way you still have it for later when you are read, but have it disabled for now.

Or just set the server region global to anything but 2.

@Andy,

It wasn't really me.

@Aaron,

My crappy ISP is swapping servers right now, and has decided to just not supply service for a while...don't choose 1and1 for your web needs!

Check back tomorrow, should be back by then.

@Weston

Good to know. I just checked and it looks like your site is back up.

My guess is that it was Weston Elliot. He has been trying to get Master Servers working for some time and probably bumped into yours while trying to get his up and running.

In your prefs.cs add this:
$Pref::Net::DisplayOnMaster = "Never";
That will prevent your game from reporting to any master servers.

When I publish the pack, or any other games, should I turn this off?
