warcraft3 engine?

by Niels · in General Discussion · 06/24/2002 (1:00 pm) · 4 replies

well long time since i posted here.

ive been playing the warcraft3 beta for quiet some time now and i must say the game is looking awesome! (but what else do you expect from blizzard.)

i also took a peek on the forums and (amazingly) there are already peeps starting on mods and tc's (while the game isnt out yet!) okay the tools arent all that for now but what do you expect...

but my question is: peeps thinking about modding this game or something familliar? im not at all an expert on these things but it looks a cool engine.
would it be a cool engine to modify? and would it be easy?

well thats it realy, hope some people know more about it.

Just so you know, the tool for 'modding' War 3 is just the mission editor that the Blizzard team used to create the single and multiplayer maps that are included with the game. I don't think Blizzard is including a way to import new art content but I would imagine that there will be some people who will figure out ways to do it. I pretty sure that it'll be the same thing as StarEdit, the StarCraft editor, only with more things to play with such as in-game cinematic creation.

Blizzard has never been known for supporting it's editing community beyond supplying rather simplistic tools used to create level.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a full-blown SDK like most games are shipping with nowadays, so don't expect much modding to be done outside of the standard "new mission type" that usually is based around tweaked units or "take this there" kind of goals.

There are already underground model importers and such, infact there were map editors in the works before World Edit was announced. I won't give you and addresses to them, as I currently dont have them to give. But I can say goto either www.war3pub.net forums or www.warcraft.org and look for the model importers.

They are out there I know that.

well ive seen some tutorials over at wc3campaigns.com and its the most advanced ive seen yet.

http://www.wc3campaigns.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=1&categories=Warcraft+III+SLK+Editing+-+by+Cookie

check this out, it deals with about everything you can mod, tweek etc for now... and also clearly states: (and i quote.)

"Skinning is probably the only thing that makes a custom unit unique in Warcraft III beta (as we cannot create totally new custom models yet)."

but something else, you guys might happen to know how many poly's a model can have in this game? (i.e a unit or building etc...)
