Original License = No More Torque for Me?
by James · in Torque Game Engine · 03/06/2007 (11:17 am) · 22 replies
I bought the original license in 2001 for $100. Today I tried to download 1.5 (after being away for about 6 months ) and all I have access to are the TGE Demos. Did they up and kill off all the old school early adopters?

but you do not have download rights to 1.5
you need to locate 1.4.2 or something like that.
locate your profile page there is a link to your available downloads.
they have also destroyed cvs access.

Thanks for the SUPER quick responses, damn! Things have changed a lot while I was away. I manged to dig up the 1.4.2 download... but that kinda sucks about 1.5. From what I've been reading the new license scheme is pretty messed up too. It kinda makes me wonder why everyone hasn't just left for Ogre or XNA. I was originally just using TGE for prototyping so I guess I can live with 1.4.2, but I feel for the new guys. :/

I don't see anything wrong with the new licensing scheme. Or with people that are happy with OGRE or XNA. Or any other engine for that matter. But then, I'm an easy audience.

New license scheme?

I missed the 6 month remark in the first post and thought that he was talking about the change in the license quite a ways back (between 1.2 and 1.3, I think) that made people freak out even though they didn't have to pay big bucks for a commercial license any more to create "serious games" and the like.

After 5 years (or so) they finally started charging for upgrades to TGE. Sounds reasonable to me.
Keep in mind that Garage Games probably has 5 times more employees now than they did in 2001. All totalled, I count 39 current employees. They have really grown a lot in a short time and as a result, are taking Indie developers in places we've never been before. But most of all, they continue to invest resources into TGE. 5+ years of code maintenance/technology updates without a price hike is pretty amazing.

The upgrade price was outstanding for Tge 1.5.0 but you take in account what you spend total. Bsp editor, 3d modeling and ide it can add up fast. Also depend on if you a coder or not, if you not a coder there is other options.

XNA is ALOT harder to use and cant really be used for much of anything in its current state. Not to mention XNA is a shortcut to coding like Blitz3d. Not a complete engine.

N * (number of differences) = upgrade price
Once you do that, please report the value of N, and let me know how taken advantage of you feel. If you do this, I will do the code diff between the unreleased version of V12, and TGE 1.5. Come up with a value for N, and let you know how taken advantage of I feel.

Do a code diff between 1.4.2, and 1.5, and find a value N such that:N * (number of differences) = upgrade price

The extra art resouces, show tool pro and the lighting pack (if you didnt have these already) then not a bad price to upgrade. Let alone the code enhancements etc.

Oh.. and showtool pro..

I actually thought TGE 1.5 was just a bundle pack... Still a little confused about it. Was it a new revision or the latest 1.4.2 revision with lighting pack and other things bundled with it?

It is their choice to pay for the update or not. If a person thinks that the updates are not worth it, they do not have to update. Just as they have the options as what content packs or modeling software to use with Torque. I personally thought the updates was priced really good for the amount of code that was added. I personally think that GG has done a great job. GG has done alot for me with their products and pricing to help me make a game. I also understand that I have to put the effort in learning the tools I purchased.
Quit your GG bashing and put your efforts into making a game that is fun to play... with any engine you feel comfortable with. Please, just lets stop the GG bashing, if your not happy... move on and be done with it.

As far as "bashing" goes this one was pretty light-weight. I appreciate everyone jumping into to defend the TGE 1.5 upgrade (especially since I was the driving force behind it and its pricing model =) but I think by now he should have gotten the point. Let's let him at least come up with the first rebuttal before we debate this any further =P
Mostly I asked about "new license scheme" because I felt like there may be some confusion which I would be happy to address.
For anyone reading this who was unhappy with how the TGE 1.5 upgrade worked, feel free to email with your concerns and I will respond to you personally. So far everyone that I have sat down and explained GG position and reasoning behind the upgrade has come to understand and agree with us.
Thanks!

Of course I understand the need to charge for the new version. Otherwise they'd be losing money. Originally, however, the torque project was not meant to make money, just attempt to level the playing field a little between indies and studios. It had the whole "help out the little guy" kinda thing. Most everything was free in those days. Buy the $100 license and you get to d/l a lot of goodies because the community pitched in to help everyone. I would talk to some of the teams, trade content, then disappear for months while prototyping projects. Now the laid back attitude has been replaced by snots like Mark Barner who feel they have to "chime in" to flex their e-peen. Wtg, Mark!
By the way, Pat Wilson, you can take your snide remark and insert it forcibly into your anus (thx, Mr. Darko). I never said I felt taken advantage of, and never eluded to it because I don't. Maybe you should do a diff if what I wrote with what you imagined and slap your mom once for each result.
Matt Fairfax, thanks for the sensible response. It's good to know that Pat isn't the template for GG empoyees. :)

Wow, SOME of you guys are getting pretty pissy about nothing. Fan-boy suddenly comes to mind. First off, I got Torque days after it was first released. Days. I brought a lot of people from the 3DGS, Blitz, Qube, Genesis, etc. camps here with me. I have always been a big fan of Torque so to all of you who claim I'm "torque bashing" well you can piss off. I said that the new license model was "pretty messed up." That was compared to the O.G. license. Compare the two and you'll agree (even if you don't say so). I can state my opinion if I want to so live with it. Maybe some of you are just tired of seeing it on the forums, because it does tend to pop up a lot.Of course I understand the need to charge for the new version. Otherwise they'd be losing money.
