Your problem probably is Vista does not support OpenGL. Scurry through the TGE scripts and set DirectX as your default and see what happens.

Vista DO support OGL, "Early" Vista video card drivers did NOT support OGL. They got it all worked out now, and I have tested many OGL applications on Vista.

Can not execute "main.cs"; look in your project folder- the one with the EXE file, and see if you find the file it say it can not execute, if not copy one in from whatever source you installed from.

I talked to a friend of mine who works at one of those "mom and pop" computer stores, well this one's pretty big, but i just mean that it's non-franchise.

Anyway, he said they've been having a number of compatibility issues, most regarding video cards and thier drivers. Okashira may be right, in that YOUR video card may not do openGL in vista yet.

If Torque have troubles with the video MODE it will say so in the console.log, and one will have a totally different error.

That's true it'll give an OpenGL error.

Another way to test your OpenGL support try the OpenGL Extensions Viewer:

I am advising friends and family to stay away from Vista for now.

You might consider creating a dual boot so you can load XP if needed. Till things get worked out.

Gonna take a little more time for maturation and adoption.

Hi again and thanks for answers :-).

My TGE works fine under Windows XP (inclusive main.cs). The only different is the installing of Vista.
I can tell. Hammer and Wally works fine under Vista, no probs..

I will try some experiments as recommended and come back with a kind of rapport (if I don't have kill my self under the proces) :-D.

Vista is a major graphics interface change. You have to understand DirectX history to.. Ok well to make a long story short. There was a certain dev at I.D. software that said DirectX was junk and would never make it. Uh yea well if you liked writing your own hardware drivers for every pc?

It's a common hardware driver interface layer. Ok now to Vista.. since they are moving to unified shader and DirectX10, along with new code for the OS. It's a major change. Not just eye candy.

Sorry not trying to talk down to noobs just to explain what's going on. Gonna take a while to smooth out the interface and make compiler changes to the runtime blah blah.

I do think Vista will be fine in the future just gonna take longer to migrate. It's not just Torque this effects just about every Win32 based game engine.

I have Vista.. TGE 1.5 runs on it. ..But runs like ass. I have run other games on it no problem.. with shaders and all and it they run awesome. Gotta be the openGL stuff.

Soon.. everyone will be using Vista.. All the computers at retailers are shipping with it so devs need to get on the ball.

They are "on the ball". (takes deep breath)....

I recently upgraded to vista, haven't had a chance to try out tge/tgea on it yet. tribes 2 runs horrible though, about 10 fps or so i'd say...on a machine with 2 gb of ram + amd64 4200. makes me sad. i think it is largely due to video card drivers though.

I was running Vista, I decided it was better to go back to XP for Toruqe's sake.

You would run horrible too.
if we copied you that many times before we present the buffer.
you guys have fun with your vista, serious gaming rig.
dedicated to tying the hardware to the software in a most transparent manner.

not to mention, no worries about all the empty memory you had.
vista will keep it nice and full for you, of stuff you Might use.

but if you dont use it, when you load a program that wants it, you will have to ask nicely.
then wait while it pages all your data to from the hd / memory untill there is room for the app you wanted to run. sweet.

not to mention the new hardware interface for driver manufacturers.

I dont really understand this part.
are you saying that directx has no such requirement?
they write one directx and it supports all cards?
.... so what about dx9.1? and all the iterations of it?
you will find that each one of those runtimes is modified to support specific groups of features available on the hardware, as well as add some new features.

So does torque run better on vista in directx mode?

how about tgea on vista?

Hi again :-).

Here I am with a little Vista rapport.
We have try with two different version of Vista on two different computers, see photos. All new computers here in Denmark sales now with Windows Vista :-O.

TGE is for us.. more and less,, "out". The lightning's process looks like it's not work and the FPS is down in the "basement".
@ Sean.. Yes we have try with Directx, no difference :-(.

TGEA works, but with very bad FPS..

I hope someone can do something with this problem, we can't do more in this moment :-(.

Regards Sorensen Denmark.

Well this sucks. not only does tge not seem to work well with vista in dirextx mode, but it looks like tgea is plagued with the same problem. this doesn't bode well for torque. something needs to be done about this.

A friend of mine owns a computer with vista on it. he didn't install vista on it, his computer is new enough that it came with vista. I installed some of my games on it for him and I was curious to see what games would work on it. a few games were too old to work, including moto racer which came with directx3 and nfs2. but other games like quake3 and unreal tournament(1) worked fine. im not sure about unreal, but i know quake3 is an opengl engine, and a pretty old one at that. this proves to me that with the right coding, opengl apps can still run fine in vista. someone at GG should take a look at the quake3 source code now that it's open source and see what ID did to make the quake3 so solid.

Ya... I hope TGE on Vista is addressed aswell. No matter how many people on here say you shouldn't run Vista yet probably 10s of thousands of people just bought a computer with Vista already installed as long as they took to write that post :P

Lol.

I can see this thread as a great place for comedy.

Linux Sucks!
Vista Rules!

down with communism, and up with capitalism!

perhaps something todo with the all the extra buffer copies.

quake3 prolly handles it ok, because of the abundance of performance.

try americas army, and halflife 2 and battlefield 2
and then get back to me here.

A LOT of games are having serious issues with Vista; it's not just Torque. If I had to give a guess, I'd say 1% of existing software runs better on Vista, 20% runs about the same, 50% runs, but either buggy or with reduced effectiveness, and the remainder simply doesn't run at all.

In six months, a good chunk of these issues will be fixed. In a year, Vista will be a halfway decent OS. There's no way I'd install Vista on any computer til at LEAST Service Pack 1 comes out though. Consider this period Vista's extended "open beta". ;)

The GOOD news is that most computer gamers are well enough read to understand that Vista's going to take some time to be stable enough for video games, so most gamers are avoiding the OS and sticking with Windows.

@Badguy: Glad you think its funny, I do too :) *Laughs at the people with serious Linux gaming rigs* :P Sure I will get flamed, but its all in the name of FUN! :D
