TGE 1.5 versus TGEA

by Thomas Tewell · in Torque Game Engine · 02/22/2007 (12:42 pm) · 5 replies

I have a few questions about the various engines...

1) TGE 1.5 download size is 120MB+ and TGEA download size is 46MB+. I know that size isn't everything, but why is there such a significant difference in size. Your comparison chart shows that TGEA is superior to TGE 1.5...are there major features in TGE 1.5 that are NOT in TGEA? In other words...why the major size discrepancy?

2) Assume we are a licensed XBOX-360 developer with official dev kits. Can we really use TGEA to complete and release "real" X-BOX 360 games? This level or portability would be rather amazing.

3) Do all of the development "tools" that come with TGE 1.5 also come with TGEA?

We have been developing a game called "Mayabin" in Quest3D (http://www.quest3d.nl:80/community/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=22) but we have run into some major roadblocks and are looking to switch to a new engine...

Thanks in advance for the input!

With regards to number 2...I know that's the idea...but based on our experience with the X-BOX 360 dev kits...I don't see it (or rather don't understand it yet). I don't see where we can buy from Garage Games the X-BOX 360 Torque engine...at least not one that we can use for an "official" release product (as opposed to something released via X-BOX Live or Arcade)...

So...again...does such a beast exist from Garage Games? Can Torque be used for "official" X-BOX 360 retail games?

You have contact GG directly in order to obtain the license for TGEA360. It's not something that you can get directly from the store.

You must contact us directly for TGE-A 360 license purchase.

We don't make any delineation between XBoxLive Arcade and a box release--that's not engine related, and completely up to you.

There are some areas of cd distribution that I imagine would have to be developed yourself since the XBox360 license for TGE-A has not been used for a retail/cd product yet, but there are always some areas of your intended game/product that will require your own work in any case.

Who specifically do we contact? I have sent several emails to your folks and have not received any replies...

That makes sense and makes me feel better. We have done a pretty close examination of the Gamebryo engine from Emergent and have a very good understanding of how it works for cross platform use (PC, XBOX 360, Wii, etc.) but I couldn't make "heads or tails" out of the Torque Xbox 360 info found in the forums or your website. We really need some key info from you guys about TGEA for Xbox 360. Can you guys get with us via phone or email and lets start talking details about this? We are ready to pull the trigger on our engine choice and our guys really like Torque...but I KNOW that Gamebryo is a solid field tested console engine with a lot of experience behind it. I'm not yet getting that "warm and fuzzy" from Torque...although I'm feeling better after looking at TGEA for PC...
