Viewport lag in Max

Hey Guys,
Whenever I get only a few textures rendering in the Max viewports I get some serious lag. Frame rates drop to about 1 frame per second with only a handful of textures.
I've worked around this problem in the past, but now notice that other 3D programs don't have this problem.
I've tried reducing the resolution for the textures as low as possible. There doesn't seem to be any difference.
I've got an ATI X850, a 2.8 gig processor and 2 gigs of ram...so things should be fine.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Weston

Thanks for responding. I fixed this by switching from DX9 to OpenGL...it's liquid smooth now.
