mostly crap movies nowdays would want Sony - Ray.

I doubt those figures. Pr0n industry using HD-DVD not blue ray. I guess big movie studios that makemostly crap movies nowdays would want Sony - Ray.

mostly crap movies?
7 of the top 10 selling movies of last year were on blue-ray.

Quote:The three biggest box-office winners of this year were, in order: Sony, Disney, and Fox. Those are the three Blu-ray players. When you consider that those three successful studios will be delivering last year's successful box office in home video this year, then that's an enormous advantage. The fourth is Warner, and they release in both formats, so it doesn't hurt. If you are going to be buying discs, you are going to be buying an awful lot of Blu-ray discs going forward-if you want Pirates of the Caribbean or James Bond or Da Vinci Code or Spider-Man. Universal is the only one with HD DVD. I don't feel terribly intimidated.

I don't think todays movies are anywhere near the quality of the past. Spiderman? Exhibit A.

You can't drop a movie without listing what's wrong with it sheesh =P
Edit: don't change the subject, BLUE-RAY FTW!

In a nutshell, HD-DVD has sold as many movies as BluRay (which recently hit the 1 million mark), save a few thousand.
www.engadget.com/2007/04/26/hd-dvd-to-blu-ray-oh-yeah-well-weve-sold-a-lot-of-di...
Also that HD-DVD has managed to sell more stand alone HD players than BluRay by 4 to 1. Which is a pretty important fact since everyone buying a stand alone player is doing it for one reason, to buy and watch HD movies. They don't count the 360 add on, computer drives, or the PS3.

Well.. Since this thread turned into a 360 vs PS3 thread.. then BluRay vs HD-DVD... might as well post some more links. In a nutshell, HD-DVD has sold as many movies as BluRay (which recently hit the 1 million mark), save a few thousand.

2 reasons why BluRay is even still in existence..
1.) The PS3
2.) Movie Studio Support
The people have spoken, the studios should listen.
04/26/2007 (3:16 pm)
@Jonathon: Its sad that with those 3 major companies supporting BluRay exclusively they still haven't managed to totally topple HD-DVD. I love 20th Century Fox (Aliens, T2, Abyss) and Disney (Pixar).. but it still hasn't convinced me to buy BluRay. When HD-DVD stand alone players are out selling BluRay stand alone players, even with their massive studio support, its an obvious sign people really want HD-DVD. Imagine how much money Fox, Disney, etc would make if they released all their movies on HD-DVD... 2 reasons why BluRay is even still in existence..

People are buying the PS3 for 2 reasons, they like the game aspect and they want blue-ray. Considering only TWO studios support hd-dvd exclusively and 5 support blue-ray exclusively, it's easy to see where the industry is going to go.
Considering all the information I've found online says blue-ray is outselling HD-DVD 2:1 almost every month this year, and was around even throughout the 6 months it was released last year, I don't see how 1 report that they are 'really close' could hold any weight. HD-DVD marketing didn't even release a hard number. blue-ray topped 1 million first, has more movies, and was out 2 months AFTER hd-dvd. Some of you are just die hard hd-dvd fans for some reason and can't look at the actual facts just because you either hate blue-ray or hate ps3's.
04/26/2007 (6:53 pm)
Ha.. it's so funny when people try to count the PS3 as "not included." Over 1 million PS3's have been sold. That's 1 million blue-ray players in people's homes NOT including stand-alone players (around the 25k mark a few months back). Now look at HD-DVD players, standalone just over 100k + about 100k add-ons for the 360 and that's a victory?People are buying the PS3 for 2 reasons, they like the game aspect and they want blue-ray. Considering only TWO studios support hd-dvd exclusively and 5 support blue-ray exclusively, it's easy to see where the industry is going to go.

You say people here are hardcore HD-DVD fans.. you seem to be pretty hardcore the opposite.. so maybe you are just as biased as anyone else here.
I don't hate BluRay, or the PS3.. I dislike Sony however. And, this is just their next attempt at trying to monopolize a media format so they can control prices. Ever heard of Duo sticks? Ya.. its the same thing as the cheaper SD cards just in a different plastic case.. yet they are significantly more expensive. Why? Cause Sony controls that format. I was forced to buy one for my PSP even though I coulda got a SD for nearly half the price at the time.
04/27/2007 (10:47 am)
@Jonathon.. The problem is that its "he said she said".. If the numbers are indeed as close as they are, the formats are neck and neck, regardless of how many PS3s are out there. Not everyone that owns one will buy movies, let alone not everyone has an HDTV to make use of the BluRay player. You say people here are hardcore HD-DVD fans.. you seem to be pretty hardcore the opposite.. so maybe you are just as biased as anyone else here.

The difference is I don't ignore the facts. If I see that HD-DVD is the better format, I'll happily change to it, but it's not. Blue-ray is a better media all together (this is not disputable, check wikipikida for a technology comparison between the two), stores more, etc. etc. It also has more studios behind it, which makes it that much more attractive.
Just state facts and we're fine. You say it's "he said, she said" but it isn't. All the hd-dvd sources come from 1 article versus the many, MANY blue-rays I can source.

No.. "he said she said" refers to corporations and their spin on statistics/sales and who they say is winning/losing. I know what the facts are and have never ignored them.. Infact, you keep going to that same argument which kind of looks funny since a lot of what you are basing your "facts" on are Sony press releases about sales statistics.
You want facts?
PS3 technically is more advanced than the 360 cause of the BluRay player (fact!) , but that obviously sure as hell doesnt mean much to majority of the gamers out there.. same with the Wii. Both consoles are outselling the PS3 by insane amounts (fact!). The PS3 has still yet to prove that BluRay is necessary for gaming nor has it matched the competition in technical graphical achievements. (Fact!) PSP is more advanced than the DS (fact!).. DS is outselling the PSP insanely aswell. (fact!) I never play my PSP (I have all few of the good games for it) and I only bought it Jan of this year... I like my DS and its inferior technology way better, so do most gamers (fact! - based on demand).
Sony has been trying to get the next movie format for a long time (fact!) and the PS3 was made to win the format war for them, end of story. Ken kuturagi, former Sony Computer Ent. CEO, said the PS3 is "not a gaming machine" (fact!)... its a clear indication that they had other plans for the Playstation brand..
Those are the facts. (fact!) Where are we going with this?
Go back to the Gamespot boards in system wars..

If you are going to quote Kuturagi, at least put the entire quote:
Obviously in the context you pasted in you are making it out to look like they don't care about gaming and only released the PS3 for blue-ray to suceed so sony can rule the world. Jesus man, get off the conspiracy theory. Both MS and Sony are wanting to create more than just a gaming system, which is why you can do so much on either. They are meant to be entertainment centers now instead of just gaming consoles. This is no surprise and just makes sense to move in that direction. Once again, you cut off the facts short to make them look better for your response.
This is what I'm talking about. First of all, ALL of my information is from either Wikipedia (are they a SONY PR site now?) and various technology news sites, not just Sony PRs. These are findings not just from what sony's PR machine pumps out, but also from what industry analysts are finding in their research.
What do you state as facts? Your assumptions based on sales numbers? Sales numbers in a field of different devices? The PSP wasn't made to play video games, it was made to be a portable entertainment center so obviously it's going to sell less since all the little kiddies end up getting the DS.
Say "fact!" to your own opinion, don't say "fact!" on your assumption that just because more people have bought the DS (do you actually have a source to quote that statistic?) that they enjoyed it more than the PSP. Quit stating your opinion as fact.
04/27/2007 (6:30 pm)
State your sources Blake. 360 isn't outselling the PS3 currently at insaine amounts, it has OVERALL outsold it. I would hope it did as well considering it's cheaper and was out a whole YEAR before the PS3 was.If you are going to quote Kuturagi, at least put the entire quote:
Quote:The PS3 is not a gaming machine, it is a supercomputer for your living room

Based on sales, more people are interested in the DS than the PSP as a portable entertainment device(fact!)
I never said the 360 wasn't for more than games.. (fact!)
Industry analysts say the 360 has sold more.. (Look up the latest NPD numbers) (fact!)
The PSP was indeed marketed as a portable gaming device.. Hence the name Playstation Portable. (fact!) <-- what's funny about this here is that they tried to force yet another format on people.. the UMD. Gotta love Sony for that, 'specially since it failed hard. :)
Yes you can do more than play games on the PSP.. as with the DS (opera browser comes to mind) (fact!)
The PS3 has a BluRay player solely for a gain in the next movie format war.. (See success of the DVD player in the PS2) (educated opinion!)
Anything else so we can end this?

I will however comment on what you've said:
No you didn't, but you did say that the PS3 wasn't built really for games based on half of a quote by Kuturagi to try to make the PS3 out to be some villian that is masquerading as a game console just so the super evil empire that is Sony can rule the world.
As I said in a post or two up, the 360 has sold more overall. This should be obvious considering MS had an extra year of sales before the PS3 even came out. The 360 SHOULD be outselling the PS3 based on the price of the PS3 alone. It's high and many people will not be able to afford it who might have purchased it otherwise. Just because people don't buy something, does not mean that they don't want or like it. Many people can't afford the price tag, so merely wish and that's the extent of it.

EDIT: To seriously just end this debate of... whatever.. I will say that the Playstation brand isn't even close to out of the picture. I envision it as the longterm winner.. But how longterm? No idea.. By the time the consoles is becoming a profit for Sony, MS and Nintendo could have plans for new machines. Time will tell, but Sony did the right thing by forcing BluRay drives onto gamers to foot the early adopter bill. Good strategy, just don't agree with the cut-throat tactics. Now.. lets just go game on each our favorite consoles. :)

Villian.. hmm.. I said that? Lol, give it a rest. You're really starting to put words in my mouth now... I am glad you agree with me that the 360 sold more. Lets leave it at that cause I honestly am not sure what we are debating.. :SEDIT: To seriously just end this debate of... whatever.. I would have preferred for both consoles to come out one year later than they did... There was still life in xBox and PS2. Well there is now, as a second home console... they are no totally dead, but they could have lasted another year... then NOW the 360 could have come out in the shops and next year the PS3 would have arrived :)

Only problem I have with playing the previous consoles is that they look like crap on HDTVs.. Although, if I remember correctly, you could set the Xbox to run games in 720p IF the game supported it.

And games:
I think PS3 over the next 12 months will start to gain a lot of momentum as the decreasing prices of blue-ray stand alone players force the PS3 to lower its own pricing.

Hokuto, the PS2 still outsells all other gaming consoles (not including portables) nearly every month. Here is the latest NPD from March:Quote:Hardware
DS - 508,000
PS2 - 280,000
Wii - 259,000
Xbox 360 - 199,000
PSP - 180,000
Game Boy Advance - 148,000
PS3 - 130,000
And games:
Quote:Software
God of War II (PS2) - 833,000
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (Xbox 360) - 394,000
Guitar Hero 2 (Xbox 360) - 291,000
Wii Play with Wii Remote (Wii) - 273,000
MotorStorm (PS3) - 199,000
Diddy Kong Racing (Nintendo DS) - 189,000
Spectrobes (Nintendo DS) - 165,000
MLB 2K7 (Xbox 360) - 165,000
MLB '07: The Show (PS2) - 164,000
Def Jam Icon (Xbox 360) - 148,000
I think PS3 over the next 12 months will start to gain a lot of momentum as the decreasing prices of blue-ray stand alone players force the PS3 to lower its own pricing.
