Lots of news today about an upcoming price drop for Xbox 360. One rumor has the core
unit dropping $100 off the price in Q3/4.

I don't know whether we'll have a price decrease in the first few years, and I don't want to comment on that, but I will highlight for you that every console has had a price decrease in the first few years."

That would be nice. I do not have one yet, but am going to need one before too long.

By his remarks, price drop by late this year (November-ish) would be in line with "every console has had a price decrease in the first few years." It will be 2 years old by then so its possible a price drop could happen. Though they could very well not do a price drop because Halo 3 is coming out... then do a price drop early the following year. Who knows!?!

Got mine on launch.. its about to topple NES as my all time favorite console.

I love my 360. The more people buying 'em, the merrier for me, since that will lead to more games for the system. :D

I'm waiting for MS to ship a new one to me. Mine died. Horribly.

I loved it until then.

@David

My bro got one of the earliest 360's. His red-ringed (but recovered) just last night. Does MS replace old ones?

Theres also a rummor of a new and improved model with an HDMI output, 120 GB hard drive and the HD-DVD built into the system... i could see them droping the standard and pro system prices for the uber system.. and i have seen pictures of the HDMI output.. its right under the current video connector...

I already own one but I would think it might be too early, they haven't really hit the boom in game releases for 360 yet since companies were finishing up original xbox games that were in the works, I would think they would wait till after a bunch of hot games came out so people would still pay top price to get at those games, and I don't think halo 3 is a factor since anyone who is that big of a fan of halo probably is a huge fan of xboxs in general and bought a system right away.

They did release that new Model Xbox 360 Elite, so they probably dropped the price on the original model, leaving the newer more expensive version at the same cost. Either way they still make a bundle on it in profits. As for Halo 3, i dont think it will be too big a factor as they released the beta fo the Xbox 360, i dont think they would change that much in it between the 2 models.

I was hoping they would put in HD-DVD. Blueray is not as open. Sony always trying to do something stupid to get more cash by avoiding open hardware / software protocols.

Personally, I like that they didn't bundle either type of drive. It would have been more expensive and not required.

What bothers me a little is that with the Elite, you basically get an 360 with a 120 gig hard drive and DMI support, which is great, but it's only a little bit less then the ps3 core with blue ray.

And the only reason this does bother me is because it put's Sony back into the game.

And i would love nothing more then MS to put Sony out for good.

Mine died twice within 3 weeks. Then they returned a launch system to me all scuffed up, so I sold it back to Gamecrazy. I'm waiting for the Elite but I'm undecided to purchase it or not.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a lot of games on it so I will end up owning one again someday. I just hope they figured out what their doing by now. Until then I'm more than happy with my PS3.

What's with the hatred for Sony?

But I do agree I don't need a blueray or hd-dvd drive in my gaming system, how many blue ray movies even exist at this point?

Over 180 exist at this point, probably more since that number is a minimum of 2 - 3 months old.

I've got both the 360 and the PS3. The only reason I have a 360 is to play halo with my son and to play my own games on it. Watching a blue-ray movie is at times better quality than I see in a movie theatre. I still remember watching my first DVD and thinking "this looks good, but how much difference does it really make?" That thought was answered when I took two identical tv's (i have a family, we usually upgrade our tv's when there's a special so we tend to have multiple of the same tv) and put vhs of the exact same movie on one and dvd on the other (i think it was independence day, but i can't remember exactly). The dvd quality blew the VHS out of the water to the point of where several months later I couldn't even WATCH VHS anymore.

Blue-Ray is doing the same thing to DVD. The quality is simply amazing and I only watch blue-ray's now unless I'm going to the theatre.

I'm glad you're enjoying your $600 Blu-ray player!

Anyway, I think it's still a little too early for a price drop. Especially when Halo 3 is just around the corner. If they do have a price drop, it will most likely happen sometime in early 2008.

Considering until recently the cheapest blue-ray was nearly $1000, my $600 blue-ray/media center/web tv/game console was well worth the price.

And considering that I can buy an HD-DVD player for my 360 for just $200, my game console/HD-DVD player/game development platform was definitely worth its price as well.

Xbox Premium ($400) + hd ($200) = PS3 + blue ray + 802.11 + rechargable wireless controller ($600)

Do the math =P PS3 is cheaper than the xbox, xbox just has a lower shelf price.

@Jonathon: The HD-DVD drive is OPTIONAL.. You can't add that in to factor a price cause to get your game on with both machines, the 360 is by far cheaper (now a $300 difference since there is no core PS3 anymore). Its not a gamers issue that Sony forces you to pay for a BluRay drive and other things that should be optional... You wanna play next gen games, and a larger library of games, you can do so at half the price of the PS3.

I love your comparison. Especially the "do the math" part where both equal $600. lol

How about the Xbox Elite for $479.00 ??
