Christian Game Developers Conference 2007

by Tim Emmerich · in General Discussion · 02/20/2007 (1:25 am) · 16 replies

The Sixth Annual Christian Game Developers Conference is slated for July 19-21 in Portland, Oregon. CGDC is open to any developer (or strongly interested in becoming one) involved in any area of game development.

The mission of the Christian Game Developers Conference is three-fold:

o First, to bring Christians involved in game development together in fellowship.
o Second, to provide a chance to discuss topics relevant to game development.
o Third, to pray for God to bless all aspects of the game development industry.
The Christian Game Developers Conference encompasses board, card, paper, video and computer game development.

I've been trying to get a chance to go to this for 3 years now... I really want to make it this year!

Good job on keeping this running! Doing a conference is a huge responsibility. It's great to see that it is going strong.

Good luck this year!

Hey Andrew - we hope you can make it this year. A good trick is to go ahead and put it on your calendar and try to keep the dates free. If money is an issue, we usually have sponsors that cover the conference costs (but don't cover travel - but contact me and we can brainstorm some economical alternatives -the worst one was someone riding a Greyhound bus for a couple of days! Yuck!).

David - thanks for the encouragement. It would be impossible without all the great helpers and volunteers!

We had a few GGer's come over the past years - please know that you are specially invited!

Spread the news to folks you think might be interested. Or even post it at your church (ack, I need to get the CGDC poster updated so that it is easy for you to do that).

Will there be publishers there? Will this CGDC help me get my game to the public? I would love to come, but summer time and large cities are my mortal enemy, i have multiphasic allergy anaphylaxis and seldom get to venture into the wild...

Hi Caylo,

"Will there be publishers there?"

The answer is yes. And a range of publishers. For instance, I publish for my company, GraceWorks Interactive, as well as for Inspired Idea and will be picking up a title from Virtue Games. But I'm definitely "small" time.

Digital Praise will be there. They self-publish but have also picked up Light Rangers from Brethren Entertainment and Soloman Says series from Cloud 9. They have done really well at getting into Christian Retail (through EMI CMG), and secular retail stores (Fryes, Best Buy, Ckt City, etc.).

We have had interest from larger publishers and sometimes they send reps (and sometimes they even tell me!). However, they are shopping around for something extraordinary (that is my gut guess based on past discussions with some of them).

"Will this CGDC help me get my game to the public?"

In general, Yes. Christian Supply, a 15-store chain, had reps there last year. I'm trying to get them to give a workshop this year. Also, Tree of Life, a 8-store chain, is interested in attending. We've had speakers from some of the "big boys" (EMI or Thomas Nelson or ?? -I'd have to dig through my notes).

Do you already have a game? If it is good, there are several of us interested in seeing it. And we can do that even if you don't come to CGDC. However, you would gain in-person encouragement about your game and obviously more exposure. Even word of mouth can benefit you and your title.

"I would love to come, but summer time and large cities are my mortal enemy, i have multiphasic allergy anaphylaxis and seldom get to venture into the wild..."

Ack, I can relate as my wife has some bad allergies and other health issues. Portland is actually not too bad but I'm not an expert - I hope you can research it and see. The Williamette Valley (where Salem, Corvallis, Eugene Reside) has been called Valley of Sickness from the native Indians - I have been told. But even here, summer usually gives reprieve UNLESS you have "hay" or anything related to harvesting type allergies.

We definitely don't want to risk your health but we think you would enjoy the conference. It is a very unique experience.

God bless,
Tim

Cool this seems pretty cool, not that expensive. Really thinking about going. I never gone to one before.

Jermaine - we'd love to have you. We think you would enjoy your time.

I think we would qualify as one of the more economical conferences around! Thanks to sponsors covering dinners and such, it is a pretty good deal. If we could get more sponsors, it would be awesome to have it completely free (except for travel and housing)! Ahh, one of these days if the Lord blesses it.

Looks like you are in Maryland - you may be the first from that state to attend. So, your plane ticket will be your biggest expense. We'll pick you up at the airport (starting Wed the 18th). Please prayerfully consider attending.

Ben,

Everyone is invited!

Wait, are you in Ireland? Your profile here says so - you'd be the first to attend from there. We've had a few from England (and Jon is coming back again this year) though.

I'll dig for your Email. Thank you for your interest.

One letter off, Iceland, not Ireland. You've probably had even fewer attendees from here. :-)

Ack, sorry Ben.

Shouldn't type when I'm half asleep!

Iceland! WOW! We hope you are doing well way up there! I'm glad you are able to be an Indie up there. That is the beauty of this indie movement!

Take care,
Tim

One of my professors is going to give a seminar there. (Ed Armstrong)
i forgot his technical term for it, but it has to do with motion sickness in 3d games
why it happens, and how to avoid it.
i think itll be informative, but i wont be able to make it
someone attend and let me know how it was!

HI Cody,

It was great to meet Ed! He was very helpful and even volunteered to check on the projectors in the various rooms.

As is usually the case, I'm running around with my head cut off, so I missed his talk. Hopefully my camcorder didn't but I won't know until I go through the tapes.

I did hear that it was good. Oh, it was on Spatial Disorientation. The exact title was:
The Cause and Prevention of Spatial Disorientation in Game Play

Cool!
