Systems required for Devlopment

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place but I've been searching for an hour for the answer.
What systems are required for devlopment?
Can I develop on a Mac? Can I develop on Linux?
My impression is that currently, although the engine runs on 3 platforms the tools run on only Windows. Is this correct?
Looking at the screenshots it appears some parts of content creation might happen in the game engine itsself. If this is true, are those parts running on all platforms.
The specific question I want to ask is, How much development can I do on a Mac under OS 9.? and under OS X. Can I script? Can I build a level? Can I write code?
I get lots of questions about game development from my site http://greggman.com and a few of the more resolute e-mailers unfortunately have Macs which limit their development resources.

- Mac is currently missing some of the content-building tools -- that is, model building and animating (i.e., Milkshape), structure/interior building (i.e., Worldcraft). However, we're working on #2, and the recently released Lightwave exporter is a solution to #1 (albeit, LW is more expensive than MS).
- Mac users can build complete code for the project, fully edit scripts (they're just text), do audio processing, texture manipulation, etc. Additionally, the actual level-layout editor is built into the engine, along with the terrain builder, so much can be done with what's there today.
- While the commandline converters haven't yet been built on the Mac, there's no reason they couldn't be.
- Mac users with softwindows can obviously run the abovementioned PC tools...
- Linux users are probably a slight step ahead, with Wine giving windows emulation, GTKRadiant giving a map editor (which will probably eventually get to a decent state under OSX as well), and other tools having been worked on.

I'm not going to entirely re-hash the answer to this question, as there's at least 3 prior threads on this topic. The quick answer:- Mac is currently missing some of the content-building tools -- that is, model building and animating (i.e., Milkshape), structure/interior building (i.e., Worldcraft). However, we're working on #2, and the recently released Lightwave exporter is a solution to #1 (albeit, LW is more expensive than MS).

Model building/animating ( .dts ) files are availble on the Mac if you have Lightwave now thanks to a couple of GG Members.
Search the forums for more details, this has been answered in great detail in other threads

I primarily develop on windows machines. Most of those applications are available on a avaible for the macintosh platform , or there are reasonable equivalents. I don't really do any graphic design on Linux systems...
Hope that helps.
