ARTPAKZ.com - Art for casual games

by Artgirl · in Jobs · 02/15/2007 (11:31 pm) · 16 replies

Hello ladies and gents, I'm Artgirl from www.artpakz.com, a new site catering to Indie Developers' graphic needs in the form of themed Art Paks. I'm scouring the net (as well as being directed by my two artist minions) to promote an idea I've had for quite some time.

I thought that before any of you Programmers out-sourced game art for the classic and popular games your making (especially since some of you are not 100% sure what you need), you may be interested in spending just a few dollars ($15 or so to be exact) to get a small Art Pak that'll allow you to quickly get your game to a presentable and visually appealing level.

I hope you have need for my creation and feedback is always welcome :)

Artgirl

P.S. Please indulge me a little patience with any and all orders. The site was designed for me and even though it's been thoroughly tested, I'm still a bit nervous :o :p

@Artgirl -- very nice, very nice indeed --

Although, I've got a few gripes --

1) You only show 'some' art, but not the entire set (a sheet set at an angle with a watermark so the art is unusable 'as is' in the photo)

2) According to your site, I'd only be provided with the PNG's, and not layered PSD's (Photoshop) or GCF (Gimp)

3) The artwork is at 32x32 pixels ... fairly low resolution for 'newer' games

4) After paying, we have to wait for someone to 'email' the files -- there should be an online store where we can just pay with paypal (either with a paypal account, or with a CC against a paypal business account) and were redirected where we can immediately download the contents of our purchase (much like GG's store ...)

5) there appears to be no license information -- is the art strictly for proto-typing, can some or all of it be distributed with a commercial game? with a free game? is it royalty-free?

Aside from that ... I think this is a great thing, and I want the Lady Bug artwork ... and I'll be placing my order in a few moments ... hopefully I get the artwork in my inbox sometime tonight so I can use it tomorrow (was gonna prototype a 'pac man' like game in the morning anyhow, and you just gave me the art for it!!!! No more waiting for the artist ... or using my low-quality paintbrush mock ups ;))

You are really good. Are these 2d sprites for a 2d game? They look good.

Thanks you very much David. Your Art Pak has been sent to you.

I also REALLY appreciate your feedback and EVERYTHING you stated is being reviewed AND incorporated into the website and Art Pakz ASAP.

Mike Rowley - yes, these are 2D sprites, etc. for a 2D game. Thanks for looking :)

Just to summarize, I did receive my ART PAK and I'm extremely satisfied -- it includes all the art shown in the full-screen "demo layout". I've also been told that they intend to distribute the PSD's with all future sales, and this was something I was absolutely thrilled with. The pre-packaged sprite sheets contain the 32x32 sprites mentioned on the site, but the PSD contains a 360x360 sprite -- the PSD was well organized and easy to work with, and allows for very quick alterations (such as color replacements, etc) to make the art look a bit "more you".

I received a license file with the art, in which it stated the art is "non-exclusively" owned by the customer (thats me!) and that it can be included in games (commercial ones too) both in its original form and in any altered form -- all they ask is that you not redistribute the work on the net, or try to include it in your own "art pack" (which makes sense, she did damn good work and deserves her credit).

All in all, I feel it was well worth the $14.95, and I can't wait to see more quality art from Artgirl and her Team.

Can we expect to see a "newsletter" sometime soon so we can get emailed when new paks are available? I'm all about the retro-game-style, and would love to see some more general scope "casual" art themes as well -- I also love how the current ART PAKZ are pre-made for a specific game type (Pac-Man with Lady Bugs or Space Invaders with fancy colored sprites -- w00t!).

Keep up the good work, and let me know if you release any more PAK's, I'm a hobby coder and I love to spend my time coding ... not making crappy sprites so i can test my code ... $15 is more then worth it to save me hours of embarrassing photoshoping ...

@A -- please refer to my "review" posted above ... the license does state that the artwork is "royalty-free" and that the owner has "non-exclusive" rights to the work once purchased ...

Thank you Todd :) ARTPAKZ.com is slow starting but I'm delighted at the positive feedback we're getting. I really wasn't sure how the idea would be received.

I also think it's a great idea and a niche that most definitely needs filling. There's no shortage of artists selling 3D models and scenery but good quality 2D assets have been seriously lacking even just for placeholder art. As you expand your collections and increase the variety of art on offer, I suspect you'll have some nice success.

Nice job and good luck!

Artgirl, do you do custom 2D art? Please shoot me an email at jonathon@last-straw-games.com and we can chat. I've got a couple big things coming up that I'll need art for (sorry guys, can't divulge anything until closer to GDC!)
