Environmental Mapping

Hi there,
In order to get the environmental mapping to show on a model you hit the sphere map option correct? My question is; How do you scale that back so that the texture is not dominated by the reflection of the skybox. The torque orc is like that. You can see reflective properties but it does no dominate the texture. You can see the armor texture fine but there is a hint of the environmental mapping showing. Is it something you have to jigger with in scripting or is there a way to get it done in milkshapes?
