Man, I created Dozens of Maps in Worldcraft, Host my own server for an Online game, do all the scripting and troubleshooting, even build my own Comps, the latest, my Server Comp is a Twin Athalon Server Board, G Force 3, mega memory etc etc,,,,, BUT! The Water looks MUCH deeper here!!!! Am I in over my head?
I just paid my money and downloaded torque, and,,,, it looks a weeeeeeeeee bit more complicated than i was expecting, at least, setting it up.......
Going back through the Tuts to see what Im missin, am Very open to suggestions here, any step by step set up inst for Win 98? I see a LOT of you need this and that and the other thing, download it here and here and here.........
Like the Update for Visual Basic 6....... I dont have VB6 do I need to buy that too? heh got the update though :P
No hurry I AM going to get this figured out, and am planning on struggling with it for however long it takes, Id just rather struggle with Coding and Compiling instead of getting the engine set up :)
Kinda like the diff between reading, and writing a book,,,,, Reading it is fun, writing it is funner (heh real word?) but more time consuming,,,
Then again, anyone who spends over a month to detail and set up a small section of a level (map) for Half life is purely sick especially when all your gonna do is run by it screaming and wetting yourself, as the little red glowing dot centers on your head...........

It can be a bit overwhelming at first, especially if youve never worked on a big project before. Hell, most of the stuff I do on my own I just have one huge file (believe me it's not fun digging through 10,000 lines of code in a single file trying to find something though). You don't need VB, you need VC++ (well, you could use other C++ compilers but VC++ is recommended). I would recommend you start here, it will help you get everything sorted out and point you to some good resources to get started. Good luck. :)-flegmato

""makes third pot of Coffee and settles in to read""
My questions are probably common sence to some, or most of you by now, but, like the VB6 or the VC++ is this something I need to buy? or is it part of the Engine that I need to locate to install the files it says I need into? The VB.net is the only Visual basic i see on the Microsoft site, is there somewhere VB6 is still offered?
Well, Hold up, before I start asking all the newb questions I'll head to some of the links you guys sent and read em alllll. then I'll be back......
By the way, In five years of posting on forums, (or more) this is probably the most helpfull I have ever seen, Really Awesome Forum, Its refreshing to find people that are willing to help instead of flame!!! Thx Guys and gals!!!! Scott

I think my confusion is, I was expecting something like Worldcraft here, realtively simple settup and start building..... ( Still use Worldcraft to Mod my old maps from Halflife) this however, seems like a complete diff animal,,,, What else do I need to buy to get this settup?
OK, already spent my 100 bucks on it, I'm determined to make it work, even if it takes more money.....
(Wife May Castrate me, But this WILL work!)

VC++ and the engine is all you need to buy, oh you may want to buy a modelling program eg. milkshape 3D its only $20(it also has a 30-day trial). you can get milkshape from here:http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/

You actually don't _need_ VC++ right away as you can do a hell of a lot just scripting. If you wanted to do something along the lines of an FPS you could probably manage to do it in all script. And you can design levels, models, etc. witout it.

But if you wnat to try out your models etc you have no .exe, but you can download one from the downloads I believe a pre-compiled.

The key to get torque working, is to get the demo going and start modifying it.
Torque "learning modules" can be divided in the following areas for better undestanding.
Media:
-Graphics (png and tga files you need a graphic modification program)
-Terrains (mis files)
-Shapes (made in milkshape, lightwave or max dts shapes)
-Buildings (dif files, this are made in worldcraft or max)
-Animated Models (this is by far the more difficult to work with)
Code (?)
-Guis (made by hand or in the editor)
-Scripts (the torque has a fairly complex and pretty useful script "language" you have to learn to change the way the game plays and looks, needless to say, you will NEED this to get worthy results)
-Source code (if your game looks or plays different from the demo and/or has new things in it, you will probably need to alter this as well, if you alter it just a bit, you will have minimal fuzz, if you need to alter it A LOT (like using it for an RPG) you will need to know your way on programming (c++,stl, opengl, matrix and vector math) make sure you know what you are doing before messing with this)
so to answer your initial question, no, you are not over your head, you just have to deal with each module step by step.
good luck!

Well to be honest the learning curve for tge is a bit steep, and is different from other popular game mods like half life or quake 3. However you must take into account is fairly more complex than those engines. The key to get torque working, is to get the demo going and start modifying it.

This is a BIG engine, but you can do it.
