LOD in textures, should it be that easy to notice?

When i was walking around my tutorial "Game", i noticed sometimes that i could SEE the different LOD textures generating in front of me as i walked. I didn't take much notice of it until i installed the demo of that "Marble Madness" game, or whatever it's called. The LOD is VERY easy to notice in that game, all 3 levels in fact.

What's the best way to take care of that? stretch the higher level out further than someone would be likely to notice it? I used to deal with that back in my Quake 2 editing days, because i had a graphics card that was above and beyond for it's days (4 megs ram, i think), but i havn't noticed it since then.
