Making Portals

by Jan Sorensen · in Artist Corner · 01/21/2007 (1:22 am) · 7 replies

Please can someone here tells me how I make a "Portal" with/on a dif object make with Hammer or Quark,, or tell me where I can find tutorials / links about making Portals.

Edit...

If I fx. walk into a building from "The building pack of Tim Aste", the outside world is totally isolated from me and the FPS is very high. Is that a Portal? if yes, again, how I make a Portal :-D..

Best and thanks SorensenDK :-)..

Hi Stefan again..

Maybe I misunderstood something when I reading the text on the link you send me. As I can see, it's a explanation on what a Portal is, not how I make them on simply way. I look for a simply explanation, fx. a test house with 4 rooms and a number of doors, a explanation there on a basic way tells me how I make a Portal, hope you understand me :-)..

Hi Jan,

you are right, the link actually explains what a portal is. An example for a portalized room comes with Torque-version of Quark, when you create a new map. Making portals in Quark works like this:
- create a brush that is going to be the portal
- create a portal entity (top left of the quark window)
- in the tree view, drag the brush onto the portal entity, that's it
(you have to be careful though to meet the requirements mentioned on the linked website)

Hi Stefan again..

Thanks for answer. I will try to do some experiments and see what happen. One quest more :-). Can Hammer do the same trick ? Because my friend work mostly (and best) with Hammer.
For my self, I work with GTK-Radiant and manually modify the map file before "compiling" :-D.

I think Hammer should also be able to make portals by assigning the corresponding entity type. The necessary constraints should be the same, since they apply in map2dif/the engine.

Hi Stefan again, and other.

Its works now.... I do thing to complicated :-D.. To make a Portal is in praxis very simply thing to do.
I make a test house with a door and in Hammer I mark the door and find the bottom "Move / toEntity / Portal", compile with "Morian" and vola,, I have make a house as a Portal with FPS inside over 300, but there was very dark in the house, so it was necessary to make some light inside :-D.

I try also to make windows in my house. Its works with a new Portal in each window. 2 important thing, The "house" must not leak and the brush you make the Portal entity of. must be making "thin".

I have make my own "Portal texture" to indicate my Portals, it doing my map-work more easy, choice of color has no effect.

Hope you understand my wonderfully "Viking English" (Danlish) :-D..
