Is GID Dead?
About the author
I Started programming in HS and have never stopped. Now an 18 year vet of programming anything from assembler on a NES console to a nuclear waste processing system. If it can be programmed I may have tried to program it!

Obviously GID is building a game in a day, but what details can you give as to what's involved, rules, options, etc?

The only options are those that you make up and are legal. For example, if you want to spend $250,000 on Unreal and only use it for a single GID, that's certainly a valid option. If you want to spend the entire weekend coding from scratch with no clothes on whilst standing on your head, that's an equally valid option. However, should you choose to do that, we ask that you do not setup a webcam and broadcast yourself to other participants.
Cheating in hilarious ways is encouraged. And yes, the rules do allow for making excuses for doing a ton of work in advance. This is in fact happening right now and is one of the external factors that's delaying the next GID ;-)
If you want more details then that, poke around these forums and www.gameinaday.com/.

The only rule is it must be done within a very lax definition of a day (currently we define a day as 12 hours on a Saturday, sleeping, followed by 12 hours on the Sunday for 24 hours in total). The only options are those that you make up and are legal. For example, if you want to spend $250,000 on Unreal and only use it for a single GID, that's certainly a valid option. There are some external factors at play, but I expect that GID will start to pick up again in a month or two. Somebody may have to remind me since I have a tendency to forget things when I'm busy, which is pretty much all the time. If someone wants to step up and help out then that'd be cool. I'd prefer it if it was a GID regular though :)
