Nuclear mushroom Particle effect?

Has anyone been able to create a mushroom particle effect, i know i see tons of effects but they are symetrical effects, ie cube, circles, spheres. Any ideas or suggestions, i did find one forum that detailed a sample, but it was from 2002, and with the new particle engine, i wondered if anyone has made the attempt.

Yah i considered that, but small or big, i dont think it will be much of a difference. I have looked at a similar particle enhancement i found that does alter the emiters, maybe creating a cylinder particles and then a offset and similarly timed dome shaped particle, but the closest i have seen is a outward ring on the ground and a inverted oval particle effect. similar to a inverted nuclear cloud. I might just look into a thermo nuclear effect (domed effect only, and forgo the mushroom effect until a solutions bee found). In addition, im not sure what the new particle editors limits are.

Just a update i looked at the warzone demo, and might incorporate the fireball atmosphere effects :) these should allow for at least the first part of my project. i was thinking of what you said jeff about doing a background nuclear blast, say as a bill board. Then have some of the blast effects wash over the players :) maybe some impulse effects and damage effects globally. this would be alot easier if i had a programmer on my team :). so many good ideas, not enough time.

I don't really have any ideas, but i was googling and found this image. Sometimes it helps to see how other people tackle the same problems.

The Tibes2 War2003 mod had a good nuke blast with a mushroom cloud and concussion effect.

I'm curious about what kind of scale you're imagining here. Are you thinking of a smaller scale effect that happens to look like a nuke cloud? If your mushroom cloud is something you'd only see off in the distance, a 2D solution might be easier and more effective.
