How to obtain a license

by Kevin Erkelenz · in General Discussion · 01/16/2007 (8:42 pm) · 4 replies

Allright, if I wanted to obtain a license for a song from whatever band/group in whatever record label, how would I go aroun contacting them - any techniques to catch their eyes?

As an example, the German rapper "Sido" released a new Album "Ich" on December 1, 2006 and the song "Goldjunge" which means golden boy in english has a really awesome beat (background) and it would make itself really usefull for the credits of a fast-paced action game.

My question is again, what is the best way to contact the record labels?

Thanks,
-Kevin

Fin the address, phone number, e-mail of the label on the CD in question or the band's web site. Find out if they have representation in your country. It is usually better if they do not because you will not have to deal with someone who has cornered their property in your market. You will have to acquire two sets of rights, usage and synchronization. Usage just gives you the right to use it and synchronization allows you to sync it with video. Sometimes the artist or their agency will hold one. Sometimes their label will hold both. You will need to contact the label and legal representation (or the artists) to find out who to contact.

Make sure that you are professional in the e-mail and note that it is an inquiry for information on usage and synchronization rights.
