Grimm's Hatchery

by amaranthia · in Torque Game Builder · 01/11/2007 (7:23 pm) · 53 replies

After several months, my casual game is almost ready! Okay, so there aren't any chickens in it, but there are lots of geese, weird creatures, and monsters to keep players busy. The goal of the game is to start a pet empire. The player gets to buy, hatch, and sell pets and eggs. There is also a pet lab where the player can attempt to create new species of pets.

You can learn more about the game here.

The game is in beta right now, but here are a couple of screens:

I just love your artwork. You're not the same artist who worked on Furacadia and Ultima 6? Your choice of color and style remind me heavily of those.

Ha! I wish I could draw art like this! Actually, the art was created by Olga Antonenko (backgrounds) and Jan Halfar (sprites). I found both of these artists through online art community sites (pixeljoint.com, gfxartist.com, deviantart.com, etc.)

Amaranthia - I noticed your games use different game engines. Since Grimm's Hachery is the most recent and done in TGB, is this you preferred game engine? How do you compare them? I never heard of the other engines.

In her interview, she touches on her decisions about engines.

It's a great interview! It's always great to see someone who can quit their dayjob and become a full-time indie!

And who makes fun games! Aveyond and Grimm's Hatchery are great. Very different from each other, but fun.

I don't have one preferred game engine. For me, I like to find the best tool for the job. As most people know, I used RPG Maker XP for my previous game, Aveyond. It was a great tool for the type of game I wanted to create--a console-style RPG.

When I decided to make Grimm's Hatchery, I realized early on that RPG Maker XP wasn't the right tool to use. I thought about using GameMaker, but I felt too constricted (too many buttons). When TGB came out, I was ecstatic. It had a level editor, was cross-platform, and it gave me the opportunity to work on my programming skills. All in all, it was the best tool for the job.

I think that I may represent a new audience that is coming to the dinner table. I'm not really a programmer by trade, I'm not really an artist. I like game logic, but not engine logic. I guess you could call me part of the rising "middle class" in game development.

Scary eh? Actually, one of my friends who uses the game creation system Adventure Game Studio just got nominated at GDC for Best New Company this year. :D

Not scary, I believe we'll see more and more of this "middle class" you're talking about.

Have you thought about putting Grimm's Hatchery on GG's Game Store? I don't know the rules/legalities are with adding a game on their store. I'd like to see more games made with TGB/TGE(A) on their to see what is possible - if you know what I mean.

I hope it will end up there. My publisher is getting the game ready for distribution. :)

Nice to see you here...i've read the interview with you a few weeks ago and i was suprised when read that you've made Aveyond with RPG maker.

Is that like a comedian laughing at his own jokes?

Nothing wrong with a little pride in a job well done. :)

[edit] BTW What did you finally do to solve the shadow issue.. or did you just leave it like it was?

Er... okay, I left it. I know I should have fixed it, but I was just so darn tired. :-)

Its not like its a game breaker anyways, it looks excellent without them, I was just curious. :)

Amaranthia,

Your a TGB veteran now, whats your take on the future of TGB and the possibilities opened up by behaviors for those of us that are weak in the scripting/programming skills?

Do you plan on using TGB for your next project as well?

When will we see it in the GG store? I'd like to see more games made with GG products on there. :D
