@Tom: You're making a bigger deal out of responding than it really is, but its GREAT to know there are external contractors working on the job.

Yes, Morrie. We are using 3dws. You've totally missed the point of my post.@Tom: You're making a bigger deal out of responding than it really is, but its GREAT to know there are external contractors working on the job.

A lot of the people complaining about C'tor don't stop to actually think before complaining. They do not realise that whilst GG are investing a lot of resources in C'tor, but the simple fact is that it's a huge project and it is going as fast as is humanly possible.
My post was merely intended to cause people to think about it a bit more. It was not really intended as a response to your post. Still, I did say make of it what you will, so if that's what you make of it, that's fine I guess ;)

It still holds that a company that cant plan and project a target end date for a product needs some business lessons.
In the final analysis, we'll all be happy when it comes out and I am personally happy to know that they've bitten the bullet and hired more people.

Well Tom, you and I will have to agree to disagree. Since Im on the outside and you're an "associate" Im sure you have more information, but from the outside "fast as humanly possible" doesnt seem to be the case.It still holds that a company that cant plan and project a target end date for a product needs some business lessons.

I would prefer to hear about a product after it is ready than too soon.

Yes, Quark sucks, but you have access to the source code, OR get cartography shop, I hear it works wonders! Even recently, I remember seeing forum posts about 3dsmax and blender to .dif. Isn't Gamespace also useable as a .dif editor?
How come other have managed to release Torque Games? They did not wait for constructor, as mentionned previously on this thread, there are other options.
How did Tim Aste create his wonderful interior content packs? That's right, he used MAGIC!!!
The way I see it, people would complain if GG hadn't announced C'tor beforehand, with comments like 'how come you guys aren't working on an interior-building program?'.
GG decided to tell people that it is, in fact, working on such a program, but people still complain that it's not ready yet.
If GG were to publicly release a Constructor alpha/beta/early adopter's version, just so people could start working with it, others would still complain that 'How come feature X, Y, Z isn't working properly?' and GG would have to spend time answering all of these points, or else more complaints would pile up.
When C'tor will come out, there will still be people who will whine about how feature X is better in this or that other program. So there's no escaping it.
Remember that Garage Games has our best interests at heart, and I do believe they're committed to releasing a kick-ass tool, just as they were committed to doing so in the first place with TGE, TGB and TGEA.
Also remember that these guys are just like you and I, they're not some gigantic army of drones, and they have real lives. As professional as GG gets, they are still indies at heart! (This sounds negative, but it really isn't.)
These are just opinions, and are not meant to start a Flame war.

Ahhh The infamous Constructor thread. Frankly, I find it amazing how unressourceful the C'tor-whiners are...Yes, Quark sucks, but you have access to the source code, OR get cartography shop, I hear it works wonders! Why do you think it's taking so long? We did that almost a year ago, and there are literally hundreds of people using it right now as part of the closed beta program.
Since we actually listen to the feedback from our beta testers (unlike most game developers, where "release" really means "beta" that you pay for--see Vanguard and quite a few other games), Constructor has been through more re-writes and feature adds than any product I personally have ever seen.
Now, if we were to release it as is right now, charge for it, and continue development, we'd get lambasted for:
We decided to make it an actually useful tool and put up with the frustration of posts like this.

If I remember correctly, they even released a beta to certain members at one point (not sure about the specifics, though)

So don't think that he's pulling quotes out of his ass, I actually said that :)
Keep up the good work, GG.

Just to make matters clear, Mister Zepp's first quote was taken from a post I edited while he was answering it.So don't think that he's pulling quotes out of his ass, I actually said that :)
Keep up the good work, GG.

Next time, keep your traps shut until you have, oh I don't know - A RELEASE DATE!
You're frustrated!? Give me a break!

So I'm curious, why did you (GG) announce this "product" a year ago if you didn't want to contend with (quote)...the frustration of posts like this. (end quote)?Next time, keep your traps shut until you have, oh I don't know - A RELEASE DATE!

Why won't we talk about them, and let you plan for them? Because of threads like these, and how they pan out.
Some of the things we've learned from the Constructor "here's some cool stuff we're working on guys" history:
1) never ever talk about updates and cool new technology to the public. ever.
2) it doesn't matter how revolutionary something is that we're working on, see rule #1.
Some of these things have been hinted at in the forums, and it kills me every time I see them because I want to say "don't worry about that, we've already got 2 man-years of development done on that topic". Sometimes, it's something like "yep, we thought about that 6 months ago ourselves, and the next release makes it forty-seven times quicker/easier/better".
Honestly, in some ways it actually is a detriment to the products or research--because there are vital and extremely capable members in the community that could help with R&D or tool creation that we may not be able to staff immediately, but this thread alone lets you know why it doesn't happen anymore.

There are 11 really freaking cool things (and I'm not talking "new particle system", I'm talking major systems and capabilities that simply don't exist today) that we are working on right now that we will not say a word about until most likely release day. I'm talking about things that will blow your mind. Why won't we talk about them, and let you plan for them? Because of threads like these, and how they pan out.

Because 2 years ago, this community wanted to know. Now all it appears that the vocal members want is a "press the red button to make my game" code. That won't be released until next year, sorry.

Uh oh Stephen... next year someone will be starting "When's the Red Button being released?" threads. ;)

OH and the red button thing. I'd keep that quiet too. I've heard rumours already about the feature set...

Subject: Where is the Big Red Button that STEPHEN ZEPP promised would be released?
Post:
I purchased the Torque Game Engine and Torque Game Engine Advanced and Torque Game Builder because I read a post that I fear to be false advertising. On January 31, 2007, Stephen Zepp posted information about a big red button that would make my game. Here's the quote:
Well, it is next year and I am hard-pressed to find any reference to the Big Red Button in the developer store. I bought Constructor, but I don't understand brush-based editors so I can't make my game. I cannot afford Max so I downloaded it from a Torrent but the exporter does not seem to work correctly. It cannot be the torrent download of Max that is the problem. Users of pirated software sharing their torrents are more reliable than exporter developers. I think that the exporter is the problem. I keep getting errors in Max. It is Max 4. Please fix your exporter so I can make my levels.
And release your Big Red Button like you promised. Because right now I cannot finish my game. I haven't really started on it either, but the addition to the Big Red Button will help me finish it without even starting it.
If I do not see the button in the next few days, I will sue you for false advertising and lost time.
BTW, can I write off my XBox Gold subscription as a business expense since you wasted my time not getting my game done? BTW, can I sell XBLA accounts on EBay? I have mad achievements.
Yours,
David Blake

Either include the community or not - you can't just throw out something every quarter or two - that's just not how humans work. These people are interested, excited, and ready to purchase the software - don't be too harsh because they are excited.
In light of all this, I think you are doing the right thing. You will release really cool products and GG will look great - then get the community feedback and involvement for version 2.0 - with the Big Red Button
01/31/2007 (12:16 pm)
The irony is that GG isn't talking about the technology because of threads like this that are spawned by the fact that GG isn't talking about the technology - it seems a bit self-fulfilling. Either include the community or not - you can't just throw out something every quarter or two - that's just not how humans work. These people are interested, excited, and ready to purchase the software - don't be too harsh because they are excited.
