The obligated question for any new freelance programmer: =)
Are there any paid positions being offered here in Garagegames?

We are selling enough Torque to continue to invest in our IT systems and foundation for the future, but we do kind of want to get paid some day. Once that happens, we will allow some slow expansion, but we do not plan on having a lot of employees.
Our next employee will probably be in the marketing/PR area. In the meantime, if anybody wants to help contribute in this area, please let me know at jefft@garagegames.com. James Hills from CYPRMedia is going to be doing volunteer PR for us, and so far he is doing an incredible job putting together a PR plan that you will soon see the results of.

No paid positions. I have been working for three years, Tim and Rick two years, and Mark for over a year with no pay. This is actually a for profit company, but it's been running more like a non-profit since we started:)We are selling enough Torque to continue to invest in our IT systems and foundation for the future, but we do kind of want to get paid some day. Once some of the titles come out and start selling, hopefully you guys will get some return for all the work you've done. It seems like there are quite a few pretty good ones on the way. Then it's plenty of beer, babes, and bikes eh? Maybe not in that order ;)

I'm not saying they're all ripp off ofcourse.. but obviously some are. Just be carefull (and I tought work for hire contracts was "being carefull".... now I have this contract, but no money to take it up to court lol)
Perhaps a develloper rating system would be in place here... altough it wouldn't do much good afterwards

Be carefull when aplying for payed positions on the help wanted. I accepted a paid freelance job from the garagegames help wanted section, and I didn't see my money (altough the client is using the material).... signed contract and all. If in a couple of weeks I still haven't seen the money, I'll even let you guys know who it was, becuase some other people probably got hired by the same person trough this site.I'm not saying they're all ripp off ofcourse.. but obviously some are. Cash on delivery!
Don't hand over the good until you get the cash or whatever it was you agreed to.

As for people not paying - that just downright ticks me off. I've been there before, and it sucks.

A developer / contractor rating system would be pretty nice actually. I've seen a couple of other places implement similar stuff. (Rent A Coder is a good example of that). It would be nice when applications come in (I'm looking at this from the standpoint of a developer hiring people) to see what type of projects they have accepted in the past, what projects they completed to the satisfaction of the person doing the hiring, etc.As for people not paying - that just downright ticks me off. I've been doing contract work in various fields for ten years. I've yet to do a 'payment on delivery' contract. If I'm concerned about the likelyhood of getting paid, there are more effective methods of getting paid. These days, alot of the work I do is on retainer or paid 50% up front, with the balance billed at the end of the billing period or project.
Payment on Delivery just doesn't happen much in the 'real world' ... It's far more important to trust the folks you're working with and get it all in writing. And if you are worried, work out an up front payment thing.

It seems to me that you are not familiar with freelance work over the net.

jarrod.. how can you have pay on delivery with freelance jobs over the net? Ther client wants to check the quality etc before he pays, you can't go around that. If after that he decides not to pay, he still has what you gave him for quality control, in this case I gave the product, it was aproved, but never saw the final payment, I only got the upfront payment (wich I useally settle at 1 third of the total amount)It seems to me that you are not familiar with freelance work over the net.
