How would I verify a license holder?

by Erik Madison · in Torque Game Engine · 06/05/2002 (4:26 pm) · 16 replies

Topic pretty much sums up my question. I'm beginning to get new coders signed on to my project, and I need to verify that they really do already have a license, and thus are entitled access to my personal cvs server. I'd like to trust them when they say they do, but you never know :)

Just select a line from any part of the code and tell them to tell you want that line contains.

Like line 1382 from player.c (or something).

Or you could ask them to post in a thread in the private sdk forums.

I agree with Ben, having them post a reply to a message in the private SDK forums is the only way to be sure.

The what does line ??? say only proves they have the source, not that they paid for it.

Why not just use Search Developers on the GG website for their name? If they purchased Torque, they should be a member and you should be able to find them.

Yeah, anyone remember those old DOS "anti pirating" measures?

Please type word 3 on line 9 on page 13 of the manual...

Hehe, your best bet is to get them to reply on the private SDK Forums.

Is it just me, or is pirating torque a pretty self defeating activity? Without the SDK docs / forums etc. it's fairly useless, and since it updates frequently any non-legit version would be out-of-date the moment it's downloaded?

A feature on the site to see if someone is licensed or not would be great. Posting in the private forums seems a pretty lame solution to me. If someone is applying for a programmer position in my team I would very much apreciate it to be able to check if he has a license or not.
The garagegames system doesn't make much sense in this field. One can't buy a License for someone else, and you can't check if someone has a license or not. Becuase of this I had quit some trouble over the last few months...

You will see it very soon if the guy has a license or not if you are giving him new/modified source files to apply to the torque engine, instead of the whole source code. Then if he cannot compile the source code, it means he has not the engine.

BTW, I like the idea of having an indication in the profile to know if the guy has bought the engine or not.

As admins, we have see all the different groups people are members of. We may be able to allow the Torque SDK member show up in the developer profile. I'll talk it over with Rick.

In the meantime, posting in the private sdk forum is the best work around. You can also email me, and I can check (probably not the most efficient use of my time though).

well instead of "GG Member" in the profile, it could say "TGE Licensee", you check for that already to enable the SDK Forums and the little TGE SDK box of links it should be simple code to change that little bit of text to add an additional check for Licensse status.

A status change would be a very helpful feature to see if they have join the little boys club or not.

That's a point, are there any females here? (I'm not after a date, I'm just curious) 8)

I will add a line to everyones profile and under their name on forum posts so you can tell at a glance.

Rick,

I see that some people are 'members' and some are 'associates' and some are 'employees' but as far as I can tell these have nothing whatsoever to do with TGE license status. Has this feature been added? Is there a better answer?

Melv, there are a number of females around. Heck, my whole team is female.

Tess,

Interesting, I only ever remember seeing a couple of female posts on the forums which in itself doesn't bother me as I understand that sadly, there is a male dominance in most of these fields of interest.

There are probably lots more than I suspect, in which case I glad because in a forum, gender issues just disappear. :)

Are you still thinking on implementing this Rick... it can't be that hard...
