Lost Colony causing a stir in the MMOFPS community

by Vashner · in General Discussion · 12/24/2006 (1:52 am) · 81 replies

Why are they taking pre orders for this game?

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jDVUorcat0

That's December build with a Jan launch???? BOGGLE????

There are some heated treads going on in a couple other MMOFPS forums
and in the LC forums. LC staff banning cash paying customers (off there own forum) that are asking
questions about why does it look like Torque FPS demo etc.

It's Christmas and the last thing I want to do it post a negative thread. Apologies to LC folks.

But look.. I think it merits a heads up to the GG development community as it already bleeding
negative insider buzz about Torque shooter products in general.

Not to mention huge mass perma bannings of people by I.P. off there forum.

Now think about it.. your making an online shooter.. your targeting planetsides MMOFPS audience.. and you BAN people for asking questions like "where are the models" or "that explosion is Torque's crossbow demo explosion". They even perma bannned and later removed a flame forum designed for rants!

Why would you do that to cash paying customers who where trying to come and support your game and just wanted basic ABC game questions?

If you looked at how many people GG has had to perma ban. Which I bet is a low number. These guys ban people all day long. Unless you sit in there forum and say "this is uber gunz" you get banned.

What blows my mind is that people prepaid for a game that shows nothing at all? I mean, we have no playable demo and the only video I could find just showed 1 interior and guys shooting at each other. No story, no different models, no buildings (other than the 1), no GUI outside the stock options dialogue. WTF are these people thinking? Why are they even excited about the game at all?

I bet all the "oh yea, I'm preordering tomorrow" people were fake as well.

Ah but they did put in a small red health bar into the guy. Another major Milestone 03.

I wish one of us would of been smart enough all these years to make a red health bar.

OH look.. red health bar.. I'll pay here's my $20 bucks... btw the game is $49 MSRP + monthly MMO fees.

DUDE! THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST GAME EVER! I mean I love the poorly designed building! Oh, and the characters that don't even hold there guns(apparently there is some l33t hover device on the gun)! Whats even better is that that uberz gun shoots exploding arrows! WOW! I am totally preordering this NOW!

THIS IS SO FREAKIN' AMAZING!

Now that I'm done with the sarcasm, I would have to say that the authors of this game have barely(if ever) even touched the Torque source code. With the way they talk, it seems they hardly know anything about the many concepts they claim to know(DirectX, inner workings of Torque, Physics, Server security, etc...). Also, I about laughed at the poorly made 'mech' that defies the laws of physics and the Halo Warthog copycat on their vehicles page.

Also I find their inconsistency hilarious. For example, one minute they say it is made with DirectX9 and there are both 32bit and 64bit versions of the came, the next they say is is made DirectX10 and it is 64bit only. Also, is it even possible for a DirectX10 only game(or even DirectX9 only) to work on a Mac? I mean under the title on their site it says it is for PC, 360, and Mac, yet under System Requirements on the Features page one of the requirements is
Quote:Windows 2000/XP/Vista
.

Two more things - One, do they realize that the only way THEY could get a commercial game on the 360 would be through a very expensive license and the 360Arcade. And on top of that, TAT isn't even compatiable with the 360? And two, I can't hold a company credible when %65 of their links on their site are broken along with their constant flaming of their own members.

Oh, and here is the big kicker-
Quote:"Lost Colony" is a video game created, developed, and published by Red Planet, LLC. Based in Orange County, FL, Red Planet, LLC is a provider of innovative software applications, proprietary online technology and online video games. The company has license agreements with Microsoft, Sony, Torque, and Unreal Tournament.
But yet they don't even have an entry on Wikipedia? I mean even their page on GameSHOUT, that I found with a Yahoo! search, just leads to the main GameSHOUT page.

I smell a scam...............................................Anyone remember the big Zelda MMO scam? Basically some guys came out with these mediocore screenshots showing a 3D Zelda MMO. They accepted preorders and everything but never released more then screenshots. Anyone that asked to many questions was 'mysteriously' banned from their forum. Apparently someone from Nintendo of America got a wiff of it and threatend to take legal action against this obvious copyright breach. If I remember right, they told Nintendo that is was a scam so there wouldn't be legal action, Nintendo forced them to tell everyone this, blah blah blah....

Well anyways, these two situations sound similar, huh? I'm not outright saying that this is a scam, because I don't know. Infact I believe there is some sort of a game the exists. I just thing that this 'Red Planet' is leading people on to make them think there is gonna be some grand Planetside-style game that pwns Planetside itself. I personally don't see Planetside, I see some guys who have never used Torque before and doesn't have very much 3D Game development experience, but they decided to make a decent game. But just like alot of people do, they see some progress in their game and those dollar signs start floating around their heads. I think alot of people are going to be disappointed and feel cheated. That's really to bad.

Well, I'm done with my rant. Peace.

Excatly if you can log in and press the fire button it's an online game and with EULA jargon you can't sue them because it runs. However if they damage GG's and customers overall reputation and income by degrading the engine technology to the kind of people we all want as customers (real people that love quality games). This causes income loss for all of us.

Quote:The company has license agreements with Microsoft, Sony, Torque, and Unreal Tournament.

License agreement with:
Microsoft == they bought some Microsoft software
Sony == they bought a PS / PS2 / PS3 and/or some games
"Torque" == they bought Torque and don't know who made it
"Unreal Tornament" == they bought one of the Unreal Tournament games and don't know who made it

Hell, anyone could get license agreements with any of the above for free by downloading demos.

I ignored the possibility of piracy above since although you "agree" to a license agreement when installing pirated software, generally speaking you immediately void it by the act of piracy and thus do not technically have a license agreement ;)

This should have been in the Make Something Unreal contest.

I love how they think Torque and Unreal Tournament are companies - I haven't heard anyone talk like that since fifth grade!
Unless they actually have licensing agreements with MS/Sony companies btw (Which I doubt VERY much), I'm pretty sure it's illegal to state so.

EDIT - @Andy (Below) - The reason we think it's either fake or made by incompetent developers is because there's been no proper media releases, and the videos released are of the Torque Demo missions. That and the technical posts on the website are talking complete rubbish. I was going to put a big rant here, but I'm sure Anton would be obliged to fill that in.

Removed the contents of this post. I can not say whether or not this is a true scam, but it is at minimum unprofessional and unethical.

To all the GarageGame developers and Torque devs that have been helping us with "Lost Colony", we thank you. I don't have that much involvement with the game, other than a portion of our company has been developing the game for over a year.

To members of the GarageGame staff that have also helped us with Lost Colony, regarding code questions from our developers, we also appreciate your help and response time on getting back to us.

It seems that most of the clowns in this thread are the very same few people on the Planetside forums, saying the same thing about our new Lost Colony game. Now they want to bring their drama to the GarageGame forums.

Everyone else in this thread that is talking smack about our game, you should be ashamed of yourselves. What a way to really show your support for the Torque community, by bashing someone's game project that hasn't hit the January 1st, 2007 launch yet.

It's the holidays, which means, school is out, and the same 7 people from the Planetside forums that are lying, calling our game a scam, and promoting this "drama" have already come here and signed up under aliases pretending to be developers, or a Torque pros.

The difference between them and our company is, we have been developing Lost Colony for a over a year, and we're actually going to have a nice game for people to play and enjoy.

Some of you that say our game "sucks" surely didn't read the Installation documentation that is shown during the install. It said that the test server (which is moving closer to beta) is not a FULL GAME. We've been running the tests to make sure we have a large market of compatible hardware and video cards that are out there.

Dont get caught up with their circus of drama. Lost Colony is real, and it's moving forward on the launch without delay.

There are a lot of people involved with the Lost Colony project, which means, when you call this project a scam or try to play it down like it's no big deal, you are hurting a lot of other Torque devs that have been involved with this project. You offend them, not just Red Planet.

AHAHHAHA.. Check out one of Andy's posts:

www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=53279

in which he says:

Quote:Not sure if I'm the only one having this problem, but I'm beginning to think that the MMO Kit is a scam.

So i guess to whoever (i'm too lazy to look) said something about ripping stuff out of the mmokit, the answer would be a.. yes?

@Andy - Why don't you show some proof so you can shut up people who doubt? Instead of banning people on your forums for asking for screenies to prove this game is real, actually post some here. Let us see what you've got. Show us a demo of the game. Show us some screens. The proof is in the pudding. You come here and tell us that you are legit, but have no proof.

It looks pretty fishy, and I apologize if it isn't, but you're not helping the cause by coming here and not showing any proof.

Has anyone noticed a funny timeline in the posts on the forum over there?

https://www.lostcolonygame.com/forums/showthread.php?t=999

For example, it reads like an IM convo more than a forum post by the times.

Me suspects the odd 10 minute gaps are where someone took a tea break or dodged out for a smoke.

If that gameplay video is the product of a years work, well, I dont think we need wonder about the quality of the finished product.

Seriously, if this isnt a scam, the marketing people want shot.

BTW you have a commercial license? Because your in violation of the Torque license agreement if not.

Hey man grow up. I can tell these are your posts from the descriptions of other peoples nasty PM's they get..

These 2 PM's I just got on the PS forum..

Quote:
BLA BLA BLA thats all i hear from you idiot STOP POSTING !!! What are your points???Do you work for soe??? Man you cant imagine how we laught at you atm.

You keep posting you dumb kid, you still keep posting.....Go and get a life you sad sucker lol.

Vashner (as they call you on Planetside), no, I did not send you any PM on Planetside forums. That isn't even my content or wording. However, what you could do is report that bad PM to a moderator on Planetside. I'm sure they'll be able to help you as the Torque game community cannot.

I will say this though, I would never tell you, or request of you, to NOT post on Planetside forums. Because, you have given "Lost Colony" nothing but FREE publicity, and you've sent quite a few people from Planetside to Lost Colony who eventually pre-ordered. For most people, they actually read what Lost Colony, the game, is all about. They actually help us test on our servers, and they participate in discussions about the new upcoming game. Unlike you, they are excited about the new game and are helping us find last minute bugs prior to launch. It seems that after they keep reading your mistruths about our new game, they eventually find the truth by following the Lost Colony website (full documentation is available) and by downloading the new releases that we've been putting out.

I hope that maybe one day, you could do something as constructive, than spending all of your time bashing a new video game.

Please don't try to B.S. around here. Did you read the thread?

I have a copy of your 030 build right here.. it's got about 10 files you put into it. Mostly art.

You have any idea how much work people here put into projects before asking for money?

I see a few problems.
1. Taking cash too early.
2. In the pre order it looks like LAUNCH JAN 1 is production no mention of beta there
it's after you pay you get told it's beta Jan1.
3. You have nothing... it's less than a Torque demo or free FPS mod.
4. The statements about about DX10 and TSE / TGEA new hardware are are lifted from this website and present as your own vision. LC or red planet has / had nothing to do with the development or direction of TSE / TGEA.
5. Banning customers on your forum. Do you have any idea how bad it has to get HERE before some get's an I.P. ban? You banned over simple customer questions.

Uh I could go on...
