PNG vs BMP differences?

So i have a simple .bmp image that i converted to a .PNG in photoshop CS.
Just setting it as a replacement for the SplashScreen backgrounds in the starter kits, and I get drastically different look depending on if i use BMP format or PNG. the BMP shows up in game looking like in photoshop, but the PNG shows up washed out and darker. Anyone run into this and figure out what the problem is?

I did the exact same thing (BMP to PNG) in CS2 a few weeks ago, and I didn't notice anything weird. I normally use MS Paint to do that, but CS2 opened, and I just said Save As... PNG, and it just saved -- no issues. What you may want to do (in addition to Richard's suggestion) is try MS Paint to convert. See if that changes the color pallet on you. Just checked out hte images in IE and yeah they look different in IE too. Must be something weird that Photoshop does with it's PNG format. I'll try installing SuperPNG plugin later to see if that works better...

One problem that sometimes happens here is that PNGs encode an alpha (transparency) channel and BMPs do not. Possibly something was turned on that affected that alpha channel.
