Dream Build Play - Anyone Up for It?
by Matthew Harris · in Torque X 2D · 12/12/2006 (4:31 pm) · 38 replies
There is a new XNA Contest starting January. I am not sure the rules exactly, not a lot has been announced. I don't know if we can use TorqueX or not. Supposedly the winner of the contest gets their game put on Xbox Live Arcade. If anyone is interested on collaborating on a project like this, let me know. I am trying to put a team together specifically for this contest. You can check out the contest page here [utl]http://www.dreambuildplay.com[/url] and the full press release at Xbox 360 Fanboy www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/12/11/xna-creators-club-see-your-game-on-xbla/ . I do have some pretty good art connections as well.

What do you think are the chances of there being a kind of creators club for the Nintendo Wii?

More than likely the other guys will sit back and see how many people jump onboard the XNA bandwagon before even thinking about doing it themselves.

Fat chance would be my response to that. Fat chance GG would create anything for it either IMHO. It's not unrealistic if GG signed a non-compete with MS either considering how much MS is marketing TXE.More than likely the other guys will sit back and see how many people jump onboard the XNA bandwagon before even thinking about doing it themselves.

I think it's safe to say this contest is on hold and MS should get their thumbs out of their ass and at least tell us what's going on with it...

I asked MS the other day what the status was on their contest. I can't give you all the details just yet but rest assured that the contest is still on and they are planning on releasing a lot more details by the end of the month. It seems they are mostly dealing with some legal issues and getting the landing pages up before they announce the details.

Well dreambuildplay.com is updated and looks like we are waiting until February 5th. Hmm the same day you need to register for the halo3 beta.

Speaking of halo, I was at a MS convention yesterday and was speaking with some of the MS people about IMGDC and found out that the PC version of Halo 2, which is due out later this year, will have mutliplayer support which accesses XBL and allows PC players to play online with Xbox players.
This is pretty damn significant in that obviously that support is being put into XNA's network layer.

Yea, mabye we'll get lucky and GG will have TXE 1.0 ready by Feb 5 ;)Speaking of halo, I was at a MS convention yesterday and was speaking with some of the MS people about IMGDC and found out that the PC version of Halo 2, which is due out later this year, will have mutliplayer support which accesses XBL and allows PC players to play online with Xbox players.

I'm not sure you can make that assumption quite yet...XNA isn't the only (or even primary) way of making XBox360 games. I can think of multiple ways of doing this with zero XNA involved.

You probably know more than me with your connections Stephen, but that's what I was told from the MS rep who is one of the head devs on visual studio.

The assumption is coming from what the MS rep told me. I asked him if they were going to be porting XNA to .net 3.0 and the answer was "yes, eventually".You probably know more than me with your connections Stephen, but that's what I was told from the MS rep who is one of the head devs on visual studio.

What a joke, they want people to use or consider using the space war template!

That's just the 'pre-contest.' which ends at the end of the month. The real deal starts in March.

I got an idea and it might fit perfectly. I started a game a when xna 1.0 came out and then stopped after I couldn't get multiple ships to fly across the screen. The main idea was to have 2 separate cross hairs controlled by each of the controllers joystick. One cross hair was restricted to the left side of the screen, and the other on the right. You would then aim at the ships that flew to bomb the center, coming from both the left and right sides.
Now the middle could be a big mother ship and you are just a gunner on the tip defending both sides from the suicide bombers. It could be interesting trying to control 2 separate cross hairs at the same time, and it may be extremely challenging once the game speeds up and multiple bombers are on the screen speeding to crash into the mother ship.
Again I never got close to finishing, but i think it would be a game possible to finish in 2 weeks.

You can still win 500$ though, probably enough for torque x pro and get a couple months of 360 game creators club. Or of course spend it on anything else...I got an idea and it might fit perfectly. 2D has it's place and there is still a large market for 2D games. I'm not saying 2D sucks, I'm saying 3D is better.
I've stated my opinion and what I see in the industry, and you obviously have a difference of opinion. Let's agree to disagree then. =)
