Torque X Open Beta

So looks like the news already got out that we are releasing an Open Beta today, not 1.0. One reason we're doing this is we want a bit more time to bang on the engine and get TGBX ready before we officially call it 1.0. On the other hand, what we have now is pretty cool, and certainly good enough for a 1.0 product in my view, so we didn't want to just sit on it since XNA is already launched.

The difference between the Open Beta and the Closed beta you guys have been using are:
1) Anyone can download the open beta, free of charge
2) The Open Beta does _not_ include engine source.

Thus, for you closed beta users, there is really no
point in downloading/installing the open beta, since you already have a superset of what it provides. At least you will, once we upload the updated installers to the site (which we have not done yet).

To be clear, the engine source remains private. Don't distribute it to anyone. Open beta users do not have it.

The closed beta program will continue, and we'll probably post releases here more frequently than the open beta releases. This will give us time to make sure that the code is fully baked before releasing it unto the world. You've all been a great help and we look forward to continuing to get your feedback in the future.

BTW, this beta forum will be continuing, although it might get renamed to "closed beta". There will be a separate form for Open beta users which will be public.

With TX being released for free, whats the point in say buying TGB?

Only the engine binary is free. The TGBX Editors will still cost $100. This is basically the same model as TGB, where $100 will get you the binary of the engine + the cool toolset.

With parity in pricing, the decision to buy one over the other will be choice of programming / scripting language and platform deployment.
